hello all :) i've never posted in this community before, but my name is Shige. hajimemashita.

i'm sure that this has been discussed before, but does anyone know if any of the NEWS members (besides Yamapi [he quit, right?], Ryo, and Kei-chan) smoke? i'm not going to judge them or anything (although i am admittedly disappointed), i'm just merely curious. i have heard someone say that Tego smokes, but i've heard it said quite often that he detests the smell of cigarettes.

anything (especially pics and/or articles) you know would be great. :)

Sorry, not that I know of. I just know that he does, and it doesn't really surprise me. It's okay though for you to not believe me. ^.^vv It's something that isn't easy to believe without visual proof.

If I had to say, just from looking, which members smoke, without any picture proof, I'd definitely say that Yamapi, Ryo, Koyama (picture proof of all three of them) and Shige all do. Uchi probably not, though he might have tried it a few times, Kusano . . . maybe. Tegoshi I can imagine would smoke if he was a little drunk, but never outside of that. Massu probably doesn't smoke or drink, because he's a good boy. XD

Everything about Massu seems a mystery XD I saw a picture of Kusano smoking floating around but it turned out to be a manip. Kusano and Uchi, something tells me they stay away from it 8DD

Well, Koyama looks like a good boy too and he smokes. Unfortunately, that's just Japanese society, especially for males. Once you hit 20 you're either a smoker or a non-smoker and more often than not, they're smokers.

i think yamapi has quit or he's a very light smoker. i didn't see any smoking scenes in his jounetsu tairiku (they followed him for 6 months!). also, his skin is just toooo beautiful.

I think that maybe he did a little for a while, but that he doesn't do it much anymore. And with his teeth having been fixed only recently, he probably wants to take care of them, ne?

don't think that show is a very accurate source. the entire video is about 22 mins spread over 6 months. if we assume there's 30 days in 1 month, that's on average 13 seconds a day.

and obviously they will avoid showing on national TV Yamapi smoking or any other habits which might affect his image negatively.

i only said that based on the fact that they showed oguri shun smoking in his documentary. since smoking isn't a negative image over there (or so i assume), i didn't think the producer would be too nitpicky on making sure to remove any scenes of pi smoking during his breaks.

but then again, im just making assumptions.

ah well i didn't watch Oguri Shun's episode so i didn't know that. but i think it may be pressure from the jimusho for them to not potray Yamapi with a negative image. even though smoking is very common and accepted in Japan, it is still not a good thing. and Yamapi's fanbase has lots of people below the legal age of smoking so it would be best to avoid showing him smoke.

or maybe we're overanalyzing things. perhaps it's simply the case of Yamapi smoking being not interesting enough to make it on TV. :P

Lol, there's a huge difference between Shun and Yamapi.
Latter is johnnys and this equals clean image. And trust me - they would remove everything that won't show him as a good boy :)

That's kind of a blanket statement; considering Yamapi posed nude, and Ryo posed mostly nude (twice) that Johnny's = clean.

Plus, look at KAT-TUN.

It was a huge shock that he posed nude, the same with MatsuJun in an-an shoot. And trust me - posing nude is more safe than smoking and drinking, considering image :)

Kat-tun is positioned as "wild, bad, sexy", hence the difference.

Judging by Tegoshi's amazing skin, probably not.
I saw him with one single, solitary pimple during the backstage scenes of the Never Ending Wonderful Story concert. The rest of his skin was just amazingly clear and lovely. Agggh, Tegoshi, you lucky little wretch. :(

To be honest, EVERYBODY in Japan smokes, whether it'd be habitual, casual, or social. Cigarettes are dirt cheap compared to the US and I've never met a Japanese person (during the time that I was there) who has never had one cigarette. Though some of the Johnny's might not have touched a cigarette in his life, I wouldn't be surprised if they haven't. It's just become a part of Japanese culture, unfortunately.

erm,most of johnny's smokes..but i can't imagine tesshi n massu with cigaretes,hahaha..it will turn out cute!! XDD
as for the others,i think they smoke,just look at their lips n teeth..n hey,i love smokers voice,they're sexy..hahaha..but i hate cigarettes though,really hope they'll realize how bad it is for their health~~ fufufuu~~

i can honestly say ive never even touched a cigarette in my life (partly coz i have asthma and would choke to death if i smoked!!) and i really don't think its cool or sexy EXCEPT for when johnnys boys do it. eg: the recent photoshoot of jin....but yeah, having lived in japan i can definetly say that heaps of ppl smoke there, especially men. restaraunts still have smoking areas, cigarettes are sold in vending machines...its all far more accessible and "normal" than it is,say, in australia where i live.

i read somewhere that yamapi did try to stop smoking around the time when he was in GYM, but he started again during byakkotai, prolly coz they made him smoke for the drama.

but then m not sure if this is true :O

im not sure if this stats is accurate, but i was studying a topic related to smoking in uni and my notes mentioned 2 out of 3 men in japan smoke, and yet they have the lowest rate of coronary heart disease in the world. haha.. my point is since then i kinda accepted most japanese smoke, i just don't make it part of my fangirling.

looking at the comments, thats about right. 4 out of 6 of NEWS members smoke. btw, did anyone notice in NEWS dvd, whenever they showed backstage clips, there are always some things blurred out on tables. I'm inclined to think they are cigarete packs. thats my guess~

i don't know if i remember it correctly though...

in japan they have machines you can buy cigarettes....they cost like 230 yen. A lot of people smoke in Japan. Some of the kids in the Japanese schools smoke, too. I didnt know Koyama smoked until early this year. Does anybody have pictures of Ryo or and of the news members smoking??? hmm...i was curious if they did...-_______- I never thought they smoked.
