[entry #1115] 2006.8.30   PM6:17

Good evening~ o(^-^)o
I awoke from the noise of cicadas today.
but it'll lessen because tomorrow is the last day of August already!
i need to wait until next year to hear them 'yelling' again..
August is my most favourite month~

today i'll go to temple to walk around with my friend.
he said we'll be having so much fun! *smile*
when i first heard of going to temple, i really don't know what's going on!
i though we'll be staying around Jin(1)!! *laugh*
well i'd better leave now~
have you guys got 'night fever' yet?
ahhh... have fever?
oh what am i talking about.. = =;;

(1): in japanese, temple and Jin's pronunciation start with the same sound.

You don't need to add "most" before "favourite."

Translation-wise, the first part is okay, but the second part needs more work since puns are one of the most difficult things to translate. My experience with translating taught me that if you can't make the text work for you, work around it. Rather than trying to explain everything in the text, leave the explanation for the footnotes. Also, avoid literal translations as much as possible.

For example, here's how I would translate the second part:

I went jinbura* today.
What's that, you ask?
It means to take a stroll around the temple. (laugh)
That's what the friend I respect said.
Isn't that interesting!? (laugh)
When he first asked "wanna go jinbura?"
I had no idea what he was talking about!
I thought he wanted to loiter around Jin! (laugh)
Then, I'll be going now!
Did everyone have night fever?
Eh? You did?
Ou mai ka!** (laugh)

*ジンブラ(jinbura) is a combination of 神社(temple)'s 神(pronouced as "jin") and ブラブラ(burabura, meaning "to stroll"). Since the question was likely asked out of context, it's easy to see how Yamapi would mistaken this particular "jin" for 仁(Akanishi Jin's Jin). 仁ブラ(jinbura) would then literally means to wander about Jin.

**Here Yamapi used the word "欧米か," which doesn't mean anything. Instead, try to read the words separately and you'll get "ou, mai, ka." Which is Yamapi's (new?) way of saying "Oh My God."

You're welcome.

Yeah, that's a common problem with translating something that's already a translation. Each translator has his/her own style, and may choose to translate things literally or creatively. In a way, it's like telling a story by word of mouth. The story changes each time it gets passed around.

In your case, I would recommend leaving the parts you're unsure about alone (especially if they seemed weird to you) and add footnotes explaining why it may not be what the original meant. Of course, given Yamapi's tendency to speak nonsense regularly, it's going to be tough figuring out whether it was the translation's fault or if he was the culprit in the first place. ^^;

As for learning, all it takes is practice. And lots of proof-reading. :)
