  • Tegomass no Radio (Nov 29)

    • At the opening, they talked about how it’d be December soon. Massu said there isn’t any “end-of-year” mood this year for him. For Tegoshi, since his birthday is at the end of the year, once his birthday is over, he naturally feels like it’ll be Christmas then New Year soon. They said they’re asked if there’ll be the countdown this year, but as usual, they haven’t heard anything about it. Tegoshi said while they don’t know if they’ll appear on Johnny’s Countdown this year, his dream is to appear on Kouhaku. Especially since they’ve had more chances to work with the NHK staff this year, with SCP and the music special Shige hosted. Though JCD is great too, to spend New Year’s Eve at Kouhaku is a dream. Massu said the people appearing on Kouhaku don’t go for JCD’s rehearsals, and only appear only when the rehearsals are about over, same applies for the actual concert, where they’d appear just before the concert starts, depending on their appearance order for Kouhaku. Massu said he probably appeared on Kouhaku before, as a backdancer for TOKIO, dancing “Minna de Wahaha”. Tegoshi said he’d like to stand on the stage of Kouhaku some day, and they discussed a little on who makes up the audience for the show. Sakura started talking about the counting of the balls at the end of Kouhaku to decide on the winning team, when Tegoshi interrupted to say they don’t watch that part because they’re probably on stage singing already for JCD. They also usually get invited to Countdown TV, and they’re happy to be able to have the year start out so busy.

    • The request this week is for “Yuki Daruma”. They talked a little about how this song is perfect for this season, and about making snow men. Massu said if there isn’t enough snow, just stuff something inside. They also talked about how it used to snow more when they were younger, as they have memories of snow fights with their friends in school, and if the traffic conditions were affected by the snow back then. Tegoshi said he always has his tyres changed to studless winter tyres each winter. Sakura was surprised how prepared he is and he said he didn’t want to be affected. While everyone’s in a mess, he can go “This is a piece of cake!” and drive on. Massu said it’s probably his “hate to lose” character at work again. Tegoshi said he’s just being prepared, but Massu said he simply doesn’t want to lose to those who aren’t prepared. (T: HAHHAHHA) Like, passing by cars with regular wheels and going “Woohoo!” (T: AHHAHAHAHHA)

    • The first listener wrote about how there is someone at their workplace who is really good at recommending what they like. Like, “Try listening/ reading/ eating this”. Even if it was something the listener had zero interest in, that person is so convincing that they don’t get pushy and and the listener does what is recommended. Are the 3 of them good at giving or receiving recommendations? Massu said he doesn’t get many recommendations, depending on what it’s about. For clothes of course, people close to him will ask if he knows this brand and stuff, but what else is there? Tegoshi said restaurants? Like this yakiniku or Italian restaurant is really good and all. Massu then asked if they would go if someone said it was good, even if it’s a place they’re completely uninterested in, or in an area they’d never go to? Tegoshi said it depends on the location. Massu then continued, saying what if it wasn’t a recommendation for a place to go together, but just telling you you should go? Tegoshi said if it’s located in areas where he goes often, he’d go very soon. He shared how his friend owns an okonomiyaki place and he specially went all the way there, 30 minutes away from his workplace. (T: Isn’t that far? 30 minutes one way? M: But won’t you travel 30 minutes for a meal? T: But it’s an hour to and back!) For him, even if it’s in Tokyo/ in the same prefecture, he wouldn’t go if it’s somewhere off the way. Massu then asked what about films, if someone recommended something they were not interested in or heard about at all. Tegoshi said he wouldn’t, he hasn’t even watched “Kimi no na wa”. He did think of watching, since people said it’s a great film. M: But when I say something is good, Tegoshi often… T: That’s because it’s really something good. M: He’ll copy me right away. Tegoshi said how Massu recommended an appliance that would clean up the floor with a rag, and Tegoshi asked for that, when a magazine asked what he would like for his birthday. (M: Serious? You copy me alllllll the time. T: But when something pops up in a random conversation and I feel like I want it, I just do.) They referred back to the listener’s mail, saying how Massu must be like the person at their workplace, who is really good at recommending stuff. (T: What does it mean to be bad then? Sakura: Like, saying “THIS IS SUPER YUMS” but doesn’t tell you why? T: I see. ….this is difficult. And what does it mean to be pushy? Sakura: Like ask “Have you been? Have you been?” each time you meet? T: Do people like that exist???) Massu said it’s difficult, and tried to imagine if it’s someone working in the office, and the best they can do would probably to just say “The food there was nice”. How would they know what to recommend? Like, wouldn’t it be sad if everybody then went to the same place and it gets crowded? (T: Ah I think I get it. M: So please be nice about people’s recommendations. T: I think I’m doing okay. I think.)

    • For “Chikara wo Awasete Tegomass” this week, they had to try to give the same answer when asked “What do you think of when I say xx”. If 3 of their answers match out of 5 questions, they clear the round. Q1) The taste of autumn. T, M: Pacific saury. (sanma) M: Obviously. What else is there. Sakura: Matsutake mushrooms etc… T: You didn’t notice, but I did Sanma-san’s (a veteran comedian) pose so you would answer Sanma. Sakura: I saw you doing something but couldn’t figure out what it was. That’s not allowed anyway. T: Sorry.

    • Q2) The standard filling for rice balls. T: Kelp. M:Salmon. Massu said those are the popular ones, and they’d have matched if asked to name the most popular 6. Sakura said she thought they’d say pickled plums. T: Pickled plums are a standard? Aren’t you stupid? Sakura: That’s going overboard. It’s disrespectful to pickled plums. T: I love them. So much so I eat the ones Shige makes after the concerts. But pickled plums in rice balls? Aren’t you stupid? Sakura: Why! (laughter)

    • Q3) xx set meals. T, M: Pork fried with ginger. Sakura: I’m getting goosebumps. This one’s amazing! I thought it’d be one of the grilled fishes. Massu said he did think Tegoshi might say mackerel. Sakura: One more to clear this!

    • Q4) The sushi Tegoshi likes best. T, M: Mackerel. Sakura: Amaaazing! M: Tegoshi only knows the taste of mackerel. T: Stop it! Sakura: Ah I see. T: I ate sushi for lunch today too. Sakura asked them to do the last question anyway.

    • Q5) To describe Massu using a vegetable. M: Isn’t this suddenly very difficult? What’s this! All the questions so far were like Level 2 and suddenly a Level 15 comes up. T: There is one I have in mind. M: A vegetable? Sakura: I have one too. M: Sure. Sakura: Ready, go! T: Eggplant. M: Watermelon. Sakura: AHHH! Tegoshi-san had the same one as me! M: Wouldn’t it be watermelon? Sakura: It’s eggplant for sure. T: Didn’t you sing that in your song? M: Ahh… “migi kata ni nasu”? T: Uh huh. I said that because you sang that. Sakura: He’s like an eggplant. T: You said watermelon? M: Yup. Tightly packed and sweet inside, with a bit of seeds? Ufufu. T: Oh? Sakura: What was that. T: You shouldn’t have done that. Sakura: Yeah. We were doing well. M: I’m sorry. This is tough! It should have been “What food do I like”. (laughter in studio) Why do I suddenly have to be described using a vegetable? This is strange! T: That was close, we could have lost. Sakura: But yeah it was good! M: It’s the question!

    • For the next question, they had to name 6 out of the 8 prefectures that are not bordering the sea, within a minute. Tegoshi said that’s really tough! But figured if they could name all of the prefectures in a minute they’ll be fine. M: YOSH! GANBARE! T: Nonono… Sakura: This is where you have to combine your powers. M: Hmm? Sakura: Okay I get it. If Masuda-san doesn’t even name one, you don’t clear this. Tegoshi-san must know the answers. Tegoshi named Shiga Prefecture at the start, and they both threw up a few answers, all incorrect. Sakura: Tegoshi-san do your best! Masuda-san isn’t thinking at all. His face shows! At the last 5 seconds, Tegoshi suddenly started singing “OCEAN” by B’z and refused to stop even after time’s up, ending in a screech. M: That key’s slightly off. And then started singing that part. M: Teru no waaaa! T: WAAAAA!! (Sakura trying to stop them) M: Doko made mo…. T: waaa….OCEAN! M: It’s OH! Sakura: YOU ONLY MANAGED TO ANSWER SHIGA! M: (rap style) Shiga Shiga… Shiga Shiga T: Yeah~ M: Shiga Shiga… Shiga Shiga… Saga Okinawa… They finally stopped, and Sakura started naming the answers. Sakura: Nara. M: We said that. T: Yeah we did. Sakura: You didn’t. Gifu. T: AHHH I said that. M: Yeah Tegoshi did. They basically continued with this “I said this. You didn’t” pattern for the rest of the answers: Nagano, Gunma, Yamanashi. T: Ah I didn’t say that (laughter in studio) And resumed the pattern with Saitama, Tochigi.

    • They did another question. They’re supposed to take turns at saying words to each other, while using all the characters from the hiragana, without overlapping. Sakura commented that Massu was using words that don’t usually come to mind, and Massu said he was just forming words with characters not used yet. Sakura said that’s smart of him. But after Sakura said they didn’t have to go one at a time, Tegoshi went three times at a row, and Sakura said Massu already didn’t think for the previous question so please think this time. Massu then offered a couple. When they were left with a few characters, they started strategizing and managed to clear the mission. T: Which means we cleared everything today! Sakura: Oh wow, amazing today! M: Thank you! T: Everyone’s really stupid. We didn’t manage to do the prefectures bordering the sea thing. Ah ha!!! Sakura: Dang!!!!

  • Masuda Takahisa no Master Hits (Dec 1)

    • At the opening, he said it’s already December 1st. The weather hasn’t been super cold so far, so it doesn’t feel quite like the end of the year yet, but the illuminations have been going up around the city. When he sees illuminations and couples, he’d think that Christmas is coming already. There’ll probably be year-end parties coming up soon. He mentioned that on December 3rd last year, they did the open recording for “Master Hits”. So it’s been a year already. It’s the 659th episode of Master Hits and it’d be nice if they could do an open recording again for the 700th. At the Dome, maybe. There’d probably be a few seconds delay at the venue though. He said he’d try to do a Christmas-like episode that day. M: So I’d like to read a mail now. Jingle jingle!

    • The first listener asked if Massu likes barley tea, green tea or oolong tea. He chose barley tea. Black tea probably belongs to this category too, and while black, green and oolong tea are all made of similar tea leaves, only barley tea is different. M: But ahhh...probably green tea after all? Green tea. Ah, sorry. Jingle jingle. Green tea.

    • ♪ Yonjushi ♪

    • The second listener asked how Massu spends the cold nights. He said the current period is probably his favourite. It’s a little cold, so he goes out in clothes for slightly chilly nights, walk a little and get warm. Like, a thicker parka over a Tshirt, long pants and sneakers. Okay maybe that’d be a little cold. Anyway, clothes that would just keep him warm enough not to feel cold and go for walks outside. He shared that if he goes for meals outside, he’d feel like walking to the station. Though he wouldn’t specially get out of the house just to go for a walk, he’d try. For instance, if he was shopping, and the next shop is a little far from where he’s at, he’d still try walking over. He apparently hasn’t started using the heater yet, and spends his nights dressed relatively warmly, and drinks ice coffee. Or take a proper soak in the bathtub, then eat an ice cream after that.

    • The third listener said her father just bought her a new bicycle as she’ll be in her final year of middle school next year, so she can use it to cycle to the library to study. Has Massu ever rode on the bicycle? He first said that’s a nice story she shared. He then commented that she’s probably 13 or 14 years old now. She asked if he’s ever rode on the bicycle. So she’s probably part of the generation who doesn’t know “Kinpachi Sensei” as he acted in that when he was 15 so that’s...16 years ago. Which means she wasn’t even born then. (M: No, no born.) His role was one who aiming to go for Tour de France, wore yellow all the time and rode the bicycle everywhere. He then said he probably likes things with tyres. Roller blades, mini4wd, also bicycles… He’s ridden all sorts. When he was young, his father bought him a nice mountain bike, when he was in middle school or so, he rode on a typical mom’s bike type, as that was what was popular then. Everyone used to gather with their bikes at a park nearby then. He rarely rides bicycles these days, only if he were to go to somewhere nearby. When he was in elementary school, everyone would go to those small candy stores about 3-4 stations away, or theme parks...lots of places together, deciding on the direction by a general sense. Now, people probably check the navigation on and off while riding, but back then, everyone just went towards a direction and it’s amazing how they went to so many places then. But then again, elementary school kids are the most fearless. He also thinks those who go to work on bicycles are cool.

    • The fourth listener had to do dodge ball, basketball or volleyball in school, and they got assigned to basketball, which they were worst at, but managed to discover what’s fun about it. Which does Massu like best? He likes them all, but first talked about volleyball, since NEWS got to debut because of that. Rather than playing, he likes to watch volleyball. For basketball, he was in the basketball club for all 3 years in middle school, and more or less played it properly. For dodge ball, when he was in elementary school, he joined some middle school kids to play dodge ball together, practised, and managed to participate in a dodge ball tournament of his home town. So he enjoys them all. However, volleyball might be the hardest for the inexperienced to play properly. Same for baseball. The kind where you need to pass the ball around, where once someone inexperienced enters the game, it suddenly becomes hard to continue. Dodge ball’s rules are surprisingly simple, for basketball and soccer, as long as you have one really good player, it somehow works out, but volleyball, if you have someone who can’t play, you can’t continue the game. He said he would just play libero concentrate on picking up the balls for volleyball as there’s no way he can be a super good hitter as his hands probably can’t reach over the net, so he can only play the setter or libero. He’s probably best at dodge ball. With regard to ball games in Johnny’s, everyone is pretty much clearly split into either soccer or baseball, and there aren’t anyone who plays basketball, except Tsuyoshi-kun who has a strong image of basketball. Like even if he asked people to play dodge ball, probably not many people would be enthusiastic about it. It’s probably all just soccer or baseball. He shared the episode of Johnny’s baseball match last year, where he was asked to be a pinch hitter even when he had zero experience. Obviously it was a strikeout and everyone probably wondered what he went there for. If there was a dodge ball tournament, he probably can do better. Ball games are great, so thank you for the mail.

    • The fifth listener was feeling terrible but can’t tell anybody about it. What should they do? What does Massu do when he feels bad? He suggested saying in a light-hearted way, even if they didn’t feel that way at all, but talking about things in a light-hearted way makes it easier to talk, and easier for the listener to take it in too. Like if they were having fun eating together, then start talking in that fun mode. But he’s the type who doesn’t ask for advice very much and keeps everything to himself, so… if there is anyone they can speak to, then it might be good to go talk to them. But if holding things to themselves will make them get more and more depressed, it’s definitely better to speak to someone. If it’s something he can answer, it’s fine to write to him, under the cover of a radio nickname. It’s also important to do other things without thinking of the problems. Don’t worry alone too much, and try to get refreshed while getting over the tough times.

    • For Brain Master this week, what was the first use for PET bottle in Japan? He made two wrong guesses before getting it right - soy sauce. Apparently PET bottles were first invented in 1967 in America for carbonated drinks, but in Japan, they were first created by soy sauce makers so they started off as soy sauce bottles. Following the amendment of the Food Sanitation Act, PET bottles started being used for drinks too. You don’t see milk in PET bottles because of hygiene and cost factors. Massu said he knew why milk can’t be stored in PET bottles. He said it’s comforting to have soy sauce in that huge PET bottle, and detergent’s good for PET bottles too.

    • ♪ Pasta ♪

    • At the ending, he said “Jingle jingle” again. Though he said he would try to make it Christmas-y, he probably only managed to say “jingle jingle” six times? Even the choice of songs weren’t very Christmas-y. Like, Yonjushi? He apologised for it not being Christmas-y, but said it was a good choice of songs this week. (Jingle jingle) He’d try harder next week.
