They talked about how it’s the final show for the year, and thanked all the listeners. Tegoshi then asked what segments they’re doing for the day (“Crap there’s one-line actors I’m going to need my voice”). His voice hasn’t recovered fully, but he’ll do his best. M: How many months are you going to keep this up? You idiot. T: No no, there’re many things going on. M: Ah I see. Sorry.
They moved on to talk about how it’s the year end, and if there’s anything they felt they’d wanted to do in the year but didn’t, and what kanji they’d choose if they had to choose one for the year. Tegoshi said there’re some for work, like “If I’d been able to get this work” or “If NEWS had been able to get a regular programme it would be amazing”, stuff like that. They asked him to choose a kanji, and he did write one elsewhere, but he pretty much just writes whatever comes to mind at that point and he can’t remember a thing. The other two said he’s horrible, to do that when his answer is something everyone looks forward to seeing. Tegoshi said it just means he said different things for different magazines. M: Which means you might have overlapped for some? T: I don’t think so. I just say what comes to mind then and I don’t think the same things will pop into my head twice. M: But you always talk about the same things. T: Nononono… Massu then said he’s got a kanji for the year, and they asked him what. M: Fuku! (clothes) T: OEI. T, Sakura: We told you you can’t talk about that. T: You can’t do that anymore for 2018. You can’t even use “fu” nor “ku”. Not even during daily conversations. Sakura: That’s super tough. M: So it’d be like, “ha hi (fu) he ho”? (reading the hiragana row for “ha”) T: Uh huh. “Ha hi he ho” and you’re done. You’ve already been issued the red card so you can’t use them anymore. They made him promise not to talk about clothes in 2018. M: Hai.
They played LPS again this week.♪ LPS ♪
When they were about to go into the first message, Tegoshi started saying “No way! Nooo way! Osaka Takoyaki Nandeyanen! (why is this so)” Sakura said he’s been using the osaka gag all the time recently too. Going back to the message, they said Massu eats a lot doesn’t he. When they order a set meal, they always ask for just half the serving of rice, and feel embarrassed about that as it feels like they’re just half-fledged in life too. They envy and respect people with good appetites. How much does Massu eat in a day? What’s the most number of meals he ever had in a day? Tegoshi asked if he’s ever tried going for one of those challenges where you get the meal free if you manage to finish a gigantic serving. He said he hasn’t, and probably can’t eat so much of the same thing. He has eaten lots at one shop though. The one story he often shares about eating a lot is going to an Italian restaurant, going through a full course, then moving on to eat a usual serving of curry rice, go for drinks, and the finishing off with hayashi rice. Sakura: So you felt hungry many times? Massu said well, it’s not like the Italian course came in super huge servings, but just your usual serving size. The rest of the people didn’t have space for the curry rice and hayashi rice either. T: Amazing. M: That’s about all. Sakura asked about Tegoshi, and he said he used to go to the beef bowl stores like Matsuya or Yoshinoya after soccer practice with everyone, and he can’t even order the large serving. That alone would make him too overly stuffed, so he’d order the regular size, with an additional kimchi and salad. And that’s just right. M: But can you finish the large size? T: I probably can, but I would have to force myself to. Massu shared how there was once in the past when Tegoshi said he was hungry, but couldn’t even finish a set meal. Tegoshi said he couldn’t, and once he ate a large beef bowl after soccer practice in middle school, and felt really terrible after that. But he said his appetite has grown bigger since. Though he still can’t do a full course, like if they went for a teppanyaki course, it’d usually be the females passing food to the males, but he’d be the one passing 2 or 3 pieces of meat over because he can’t finish. Sakura: It’s usually the other way round. T: Yeah, but I totally give food to females all the time. M: How lame. T: OEI. I just want to go home thinking it was a good meal. And eat the garlic rice at the end. If I ate too much meat I wouldn’t be able to stomach the garlic rice. They commented how he’s got a small appetite, and Tegoshi said he looks up to those with large appetites, as food is always delicious to them, like Gal Sone. They don’t have to push themselves to eat too much and the stage when food is delicious continues endlessly. Massu said he can eat about 6-7 dishes by himself too, and the other two said they’re envious. Tegoshi shared how he always thinks he can eat a lot when he’s hungry and order a lot through delivery or take a lot at buffets, and end up having a whole lot of leftovers and feel sorry about that. M: Just order one fried rice! T: Right. That’s best. I don’t need more than that. But I just do that then I get hungry. Sakura said she understands that feeling. That said it’s perfectly fine for the listener to not have a huge appetite and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about. M: There aren’t that many who can enter my league. T: Yeah. Because it’s Giant Masuda (referring to speed eater Nobuyuki Shirota’s nickname of “Giant Shirota”)
The next listener said people tend to be divided into those who do better under praise, and those who get fired up after being criticized. The listener belongs to the type who do better when they are encouraged. Which do they belong to? Massu said the listener’s type is slightly different from the first two, so there are three types. All three of them belong to the type who do better under praise. Massu said if people got mad at him, or if they gave him advice like, “You should do this here,” he tends to get worse. On top of not being able to perform to the level like he did then, he’d tend to perform even worse. He’d get hurt from being told those things think, “Ah, that performance was terrible” (T: Yeah lose confidence. Yeah.) Tegoshi agreed, and said he’ll probably get even more defiant if the sempais from Johnny’s gave critique on his work. Of course, if they made sense, he’d accept it with grace, but if it didn’t, and it’s criticism on work he’s really proud of, he’d just feel defiant. M: Like, “ItteQ was really boring” T: I’d go “Shut up” Sakura: Even with the sempais? T: I would, I would, definitely. M: Shall we practise? ItteQ was so boring. T: Shut up you idiot. (2 secs of silence) Will I really manage to say this? Sakura: Can you, to begin with? T: Nah I think I will. I will. Sakura: Hehh~~ M: I’ll stop him if that happens. T: Yeah I’ll be counting on you then. M: I’ll whack Tegoshi’s head from behind. Grab him by the neck and bring him back. Sakura: Yeah that’s better. Bring him back before anything happens. T: That’s right.
Going back to the question, they asked if Sakura had any stories to share of when she didn’t get praised and didn’t manage to do better. She said if she was encouraged during the actual run, she’d manage to do even better, even if she were already at her maximum limit then. But if in between, she was told something she said wasn’t necessary, she won’t be able to do well anymore. Massu said he understood, like if he was told something he said wasn’t necessary, he wouldn’t know what to say anymore. He said it’s not about how he’d get even cooler if he was told, “Massu’s so cool!” But more like, if he was given really good advice, he’d be thankful and want to do even better. He just wanted to get it clear that they don’t belong to the type who’d grow just because they’re praised, even in such shallow ways. The other two agreed. Tegoshi added that if he was gotten mad at or criticised by people he didn’t care about, he wouldn’t be affected at all. It’d just go in one ear and out the other. But if it’s from someone he really respects, it’d affect him a LOT. They concluded saying they’d want to become people who are good at praise, so they can become good motivators (“mochibe-ta-” in Japlish) M: Is that a new type of mochi? T: Shut up. I’m going to end this off. Sorry. (in the background while Tegoshi was reading the ending lines) Sakura: He got mad at you. M: Yeah he did. T: (once he was done) We didn’t need that. Not at all.For “One-line Actors” this week, Massu started first, and had to say “Sunny, and cloudy at times with showers in some areas” while brushing his teeth. He just made gurgling sounds. T: HANG ON! You’ve got your toothbrush way too far in! You’re brushing your teeth, not your tongue! M: That doesn’t happen? No? T: I think it’s better to stop brushing your teeth.
For his second attempt, he just made mumbling sounds. T: That was the voice of someone who’s 500kg! M: It’s how you’d sound after you do thorough brushing, with lots of foam. T: Talk after you’ve gurgled! M: That said to say WHILE brushing! Sakura said Massu had his finger brushing the side of his cheeks but like that would make a difference, since toothbrushes need to go inside the mouth. For Tegoshi, he had to say “Hmm?? This is strange” while like he’s sleep talking. Tegoshi started making weird sounds again before he was given the cue, and Sakura had to stop him. (M: Shall we add that it’s during the concert? Yes? T: Nono! I don’t want to have to shout!) He was silent for the first couple of seconds before mumbling really softly. M: Sorry, but that wasn’t interesting at all. Sakura: Your voice was so soft! T: Because I’m sleep talking! Sakura: You’re supposed to act! T: It’s not whether or not it’s interesting, it’s SLEEP TALK! So Massu won this round, because Tegoshi’s voice is so soft. He said his question wasn’t made for radio. Sakura: Then do it FOR radio!
For the second round, Tegoshi went first, saying “Teacher” like he’s soothing a baby. He started making crying sounds again before he was given the cue. And they had to stop him again. T: (lots of random crying sounds with “So cute”) Teacher. HAHAHAHAHAHHA. M: This guy’s scary. Sakura: He’s laughing by himself! T: HAHHAHAAHA. This is it! M: This guy’s scary. T: I did this seriously. Sakura: That was scary.
Massu had to say “Hmm? Did you cut your hair?” while he’s about to sneeze. M: (some weird sound, then really quickly and muffled) Hmm? Did you cut your hair? Hurhurhur. No that was bad. Sakura: Terrible. Both of you were terrible! What should I do? This is so hard to choose! (lots of laughter in the background) So they went for a quick third round.Massu went first, saying “I forgot my wallet” while throwing a tantrum. He did his line pretty okay, with a bump heard in the background. Sakura: Masuda-san, did you bump your leg into something? M: It hurts, but that’s not the focus. Praise my acting. Sakura: That was great. Really great. T: Oh man oh man… I need Degawa-san to come save me!
Tegoshi had to say “Yay!” while having his nose attacked by a crayfish’s pincers. (I need Degawa-san to come save me!) M: Ah it does sound like something Degawa-san would do. He just kept talking non-stop saying “It hurts” till the end when he goes “Yay”. At the end, he went, “This is no good. I’m going home.” Sakura: No sit down. Sit down. Hear the result. T: This is too embarrassing. M: I think we feel more embarrassed watching you, thinking, this is really long. T: Let me go home, please. Sakura: Have a drink or something, and calm down. Tegoshi said he hasn’t felt embarrassed in a long while, and to no surprise, Massu won this round. Tegoshi said he’d ask Degawa-san to do it once for him the next time he meets him to see the “right” answer and they all agreed that he probably would. At the end, they promoted “LPS” and “NEVERLAND” DVD/ Bluray. Massu probably did something with a tank top or something while Sakura was reading the address, as Tegoshi and Sakura said how gross it was and they said they hoped he’d walk in that along Shibuya in summer. Massu said it’s the last tank top, LTT, but that’s not the new song. The new song is LPS. T: That was unnecessary. Ah crap. Now I’m worried about next year. Tegoshi then talked about how he hasn’t been doing well, for both “One-line Actors” and for the week before too. M: There hasn’t been anything good to begin with. T: AHHH I was good recently. M: If you could even manage one win next year, it’d be nice. One. T: I can. Sakura: HAHHHA. M: At the very least. T: Then let me win once. They talked about his crayfish thing again, how it’s probably the time he fell flat most in the past five years. They ended with Tegoshi wishing everyone a happy new year.
Masuda Takahisa no Master Hits (Dec 29)
At the opening, he talked about how this was the last show for the year, and though it didn’t feel like the end of the year before Christmas, the end of the year came real soon once Christmas was here. He shared how they were told about the photo shoot for Johnny’s Countdown’s group uchiwas, before they were even told that they were going to appear on JCD. That’s how they found out they were appearing on JCD. That’s usually how it happens each year. He also shared his kanji for the year again, which was the same as he said on TM radio, “Fuku” 服.
The first message asked if Massu prefers gyoza or castella. He said it’s hard to decide as they belong to different genres, and said he likes both.
♪ LPS ♪
The second message asked how Massu felt his year was, and what kind of year he’d like to make 2018. He said like how the listener said they were able to work hard for the year because of Massu, he also managed to work hard because of everyone. This year, they were managed to create “NEVERLAND”, and while they have been singing songs of different types all along, this time they had songs that exist within the realm of “NEVERLAND”. To have created an album and then a tour based on a theme had been a new challenge and a learning experience for them. After the tour ended, all the staff and juniors were crying, saying they had so much fun and that they were glad to have been part of it. He was really happy to hear that and hope the audience who went for the tour had fun too. They might had relatively few musical releases but “EMMA” and “NEVERLAND” were great releases and he’s happy. He’s managed to experience a lot, and would work hard, bit by bit, to make 2018 a better year than this one.
The third message said they have problems answering the question of “What food they like”, as there are plenty and have no idea which to answer. Massu said he had the best answer, “gyoza”. He also has lots of food he likes, and nothing he especially dislikes. He likes home-cooked food, likes eating out too, frozen food, take-outs...considering all these different situations, gyoza makes the easiest answer. Even though there’s plenty that he likes at the same level as gyoza. Like castella.
The fourth message is from someone in her third year of middle school. She had been wearing skirts till her second year, but from this year onwards, she got conscious of the looks from people around her, and started wearing only stuff like pants and jeans. Does Massu think skirts look childish? What kind of clothes does Massu like? He said those fluffy skirts do feel like what tank tops are for guys in summer. Like, tank top x jeans x sneakers. And skirts are difficult items for him. There are many different variations of skirts, just like how there are for tank tops, so it’s hard for him to generalise. While he likes skirts, he also feels they are tough. Like, while he thinks tank tops can be cool, if someone were to walk around in just a tank top, it’d look as if that person just wants to show off his muscles. But if it was matched with a chic jacket, and worn on the loose side, it’d suddenly look cool. So it depends on how the item is worn. He suggests wearing lots of different types of pants/ jeans, and that might change her perception of skirts. Like for him, when he wears slimmer pants, he thinks those are nice in their way too. Rather then wearing the same things all the time, she’d get more perceptions when she puts skirts on again. M: This is coming from someone who’s never worn skirts...ah wait. Maybe I do. Well, skirt-like stuff. Ah. I see. So skirts aren’t childish. It’s just how you wear it. In conclusion, he suggested for her to wear lots of different things, and find out what suited her most.
The fifth message is from someone who prefers talking to the staff over reading magazines when they go to the hairdresser’s, but was asked if the magazines are boring during a recent visit. Is Massu the type to talk to the staff at the hairdresser’s? He said there are both types of people, but it depends on the relationship with the hair stylist. He’s pretty much friends with his, and when he doesn’t feel like talking, they probably would get it, so whatever goes. There aren’t times when he just wants to concentrate on the magazine and not have them speaking to him, and he could probably even ask to bring the magazine home if he found it interesting. So it’s probably easy if they could get that close with their hair stylist. Might be tough if it’s someone they just started visiting. He talks a lot, and reads too, but from the point of view of the stylist, they probably pick magazines according to the age, gender, dressing style and all of the customers. So the hairstylist probably asked that question to find out if their choice of magazines weren’t right. Though there are also different types of hair stylists, like those who are really good, but refuse to talk at all. At the end, he said if they manage to get closer to the hair stylist, it does get a lot easier, as then it saves a lot of trouble as they’d probably get a lot of things, like the hairstyles they like and stuff too.
The sixth message wanted advice from Massu. Recently, they were invited to the movies by a close friend, but it was for a horror film, which they didn’t like. They replied honestly that they were bad with horror films, but the friend replied saying they thought the listener would definitely agree. What would Massu do? Massu said if he were the one doing the inviting, he’d probably ask the friend to come. (Hurhurhurhur!) And the conversation would probably go along the lines of “Let’s go to the movies” “No I don’t like that genre” “No let’s go” “Nope I don’t want to” “No, come!” “Ok” This is it. Perfect. And this is what communication is. He also said it’s not very nice of that friend to let one movie rejection affect their relationship. And making someone watch something they don’t like it’s like making someone go eat something super spicy together. If you can’t take spicy food, you just can’t. So if he were on the side being persistently invited, the conversation would probably go, “Let’s go for a horror film” “No I’m bad with horror” “But I thought if it were Massu, you’d say okay” “There’s no way I would!” This is all about communication too. Like, “Go if you want to!” (slight pause) Wouldn’t this work? He said movies are something you’d want to go for the ones they like, and to talk properly with the friend, or maybe introduce someone else they can go with. It’s okay to not watch what they’re bad with, and to just be gentle with the rejection.

For Masterpiece this week, he played “Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift. He talked a little about the song and how this album is one that he’s listening a lot to these days.
At the end, he promoted “LPS”, “NEVERLAND” DVD/ Bluray and JCD. He thanked everyone for the year and to please continue supporting Master Hits next year too.
