  • The first message was from a listener who said that though they lacked the vocab to properly express how they feel, they thought that Tuberose was really interesting. (S: [The meaning] comes through!) They talked more about what they liked about the book, and said that they like to stay up late and read books out loud while drinking shochu because they like hearing the rhythm and it makes them feel the emotions in the writing more. They like Shige’s writing and are looking forward to what he’ll do in the future.
    
    Shige said he was happy to hear how they enjoyed reading his books out loud. Shige said that he also sometimes reads out loud when he’s writing and is having trouble getting the phrasing right. He thinks that you can discover new things by reading out loud. He reiterated that he was happy to get her message and told the listeners that they don’t have to apologize for a lack of vocabulary when writing in, they’re conveying their thoughts just fine.

  • Shige talked about how NEWS got to appear on Love Music when LPS was released, and how they got to talk about music. He said he was a bit worried if was ok for him to talk to passionately about music on the program, though he sounds even more like a maniac on this radio show. He talked about how they discussed the first CD they ever bought, and how when he was younger his family would rent cassette tapes and copy them. He was influenced a lot by his father who loved music. He listened to SPEED, Mister Children, Glay and of course Johnny’s. He sang Glay a lot as an elementary school student and remembers memorizing the lyrics. Since he had a lot of mixtapes he didn’t really buy many CDs. He would sometime receive CDs of the groups he mentioned liking, though he doesn’t remember from who. So, when he entered Johnny’s he’d never bought a CD with his own money. He would think about the fact that someone might ask him what the first CD he bought was, and that made him unable to buy one, thinking that this will end up being the first CD that I ever bought. He thought about it a lot, and as he said in Love Music, he ended up buying Judy and Mary’s CD when he heard that they were going to break up. There was a long period where they didn’t release anything, and then they announced their newest album and that they were breaking up at the same time. He was sad that they were breaking up, and the new album was really good so he was glad that it was the first CD he bought. If you were to narrow it down to the first single he ever bought, it was probably a Pronograffiti single.
    
    He really listened to Judy and Mary a lot, and talking about it on Love Music made him want to relisten and it made realize all over again what good music it is. In particular, he liked their songs ‘warp’, ‘lucky pool’, and ‘brand new wave upper ground’. He also talked about and later played their song, ‘Atashi wo Mitsukete’ which had been used in a commercial, and how certain phrases from it have stuck with him. Even now he thinks the lyrics are really good. He said he really wants people to listen to the album, young people too. He wants more people to realize who amazing and good Judy and Mary were.

  
  

  • Next, Shige wanted to talk about club activities since NEWS had recently discussed them when they appeared on music station.
    
    The next message was from a listener who said that they had watched music station and when they were in high school they also weren’t in a club, and while they had a lot of fun not being in a club, there were times when they missed being in one. They wanted to know if there were any clubs that Shige had wanted to join.
    
    Shige said that since he debuted when he was a first year in high school, he didn’t have any. In elementary school he was more focused on cram school since he had to take an entrance exam to get into junior high school. Then in junior high school he had wanted to do a sport that no one else had done while in elementary school, so he had tried to join the tennis club. But, when he said that wouldn’t really be able to participate in practices he was told it would be better not to join. Even though now, he thinks that it should be fine to participate in school club even when you have miss practices. He had admired the tennis club, and it had also been during the height of ‘Prince of Tennis’s popularity and his school shared the same characters in its name as the school in Prince of Tennis.
    
    He added that sometimes he regrets not being in a club, and encouraged those entering junior and high school now to do because they’ll be sad if they don’t have those memories. He said sometimes it’s sad to see that he’s not in any of the club photos. But also reassured listeners to not push themselves too hard if they can’t, and there are other memories they can make instead as well.

  
  

  • The next message was from a listener who first asked Shige to not react to her message like, “Again!” but that for older fans it’s really fun to hear Shige talk about alcohol. They said that they like to drink, but they tried the whiskey that Shige likes and that it wasn’t really their taste and so wanted to know what alcohol he liked second best after whiskey.
    
    Shige said that though he does really like whiskey, it’s not necessary his favorite type of alcohol. He said it’s tough to rank his favorite, though he does drink a lot of shochu, but it depends on the food and for what purpose you’re drinking. He talked about how when he went to Amami Ooshima and when he’s there he drinks Kokuto Shochu with his friends because it’s only made there. He said it’s really easy to drink as it’s made using brown sugar and he would recommend that.

  • The guests this week were Massu and Nori-san.

  
  

  • Koyama said that they asked Nori-san to join them today because it was Valentine’s day, and Nori-san joked and said that ‘Valentine’s day = Nori-san’ because it’s when you receive chocolate (chokomorai) and Massu joked playing off of that by changing it to ‘monomorai’ which means ‘beggar’. Koyama and Nori-san stopped the conversation to comment on it and Massu said that he had just meant it as a passing comment for the listeners to pick up on, but if they were going to make a big deal out of he would have wanted to make a better joke. Koyama protested saying that it’d never occur to him to think of monomorai from chokomorai, and Nori-san asked Massu if he had stayed up late to think of that, writing it all in a notebook.
    
    They then continued to talk about receiving chocolate on Valentine’s day, and Koyama asked Nori-san if he’s ever received chocolate from someone who was giving it because they actually liked him rather than out of obligation. He thought back and said that he had, all the chocolate given to him out of obligation he receives as if it was given because they like him. When Koyama asked him how many people he’s received chocolate like that from before, he first asked if chocolate from his mother counted and they laughed and told him it didn’t. Nori-san then said thinking back, he actually hasn’t.
    
    Koyama asked Nori-san if he liked chocolate and he said he did, Massu also said he liked chocolate when asked and added that Koyama must definitely like chocolate. Koyama said that he does but he can’t eat a lot of it in one day, he could eat about 2 pieces in a day. Massu agreed with Koyama but Nori-san said that his chocolate would all disappear right away.
    
    Nori-san asked them if they receive Valentine’s day chocolate and Koyama said that he doesn’t. Massu said that he just came from another job and had received a lot of chocolate from the staff there, repeatedly apologizing for his many bags. Nori-san accused him of buying the chocolate himself, and then that it wasn’t actually chocolate but gyoza.
    
    Koyama then changed the subject saying that he wanted to talk about how they went to New York. Nori-san said that going to New York can change your life, and Massu commented on how he was talking like Tegoshi. Nori-san said that he’s actually a Los Angeles person rather than NYC. He asked them why they went to NYC and Koyama and Massu answered that they went to see the Grammy’s but Nori-san didn’t know what that was which surprised them and Koyama asked if he really didn’t know the world’s most prestigious music awards show. When Massu clarified calling it the Grammy awards, he seemed to realize what they were talking about.
    
    Koyama talked about how Bruno Mars got a lot of awards this year, and how you have to be invited in order to attend. He said that they received the agency’s invites. As they’re talking about the Grammy’s conversation derailed to talking about receiving chocolate again and Massu’s monomorai word play. Koyama told Massu he has to come up with another word play. Koyama talked about how good the show was and how it’s broadcast live and how they were able to watch live performances of people they usually only get listen to via CD. He also talked about how there’s a black tie dress code, and it’s an opportunity that you wouldn’t normally get.
    
    Nori-san commented on how Massu was being quiet, and he explained that he was seriously thinking about his word play, and Nori-san tried to give him a lead into it talking about how he was receiving chocolate in Japan… and Massu called him a ‘moraibito’, combining the words ‘to receive’ and person ‘hito’. Koyama told him he was doing it wrong, ‘morai’ has to come at the end of the word like ‘chokomorai’ and ‘monomorai’. They told him to try again.
    
    Koyama asked Nori-san where he’s gone recently outside of Japan, and he replied that he hasn’t really gone anywhere, but he’s been to Los Angeles, Hawaii, and Guam and they talked about his Hawaii trip a bit before Koyama complained that Massu was taking too long to come up with his word play and Massu said that he couldn’t do it.
    
    Nori-san asked them how long they spent in NYC and Koyama said that he spent a little less than a week there, since he had every he had to return to Japan early. He talked about how they went there to train, and Massu said that their schedules had been jam packed, busy from morning to night. They saw plays, did vocal training etc. Nori-san asked them if they had had any free time and Massu said he’d had about 30 minutes free to go shopping or whatever and he’d gone to a coffee shop.
    
    M: I went to coffee shop (in English)
    
    They talked about the difference in sizes, and how American sizes are so much bigger than in Japan. An L size drink in America is completely different from an L in Japan, it’s closer to a Japan size LL. They said that they thought Nori-san would like it since he’d be able to drink a lot and he said it’d probably be perfect for him and asked about how big the L was, if it was about the size of his face and Massu said that it was big enough that your face be able to fit inside it.
    
    They laughed because they expected the conversation to lead into another joke from Massu, but it didn’t. Koyama told Massu that he has to come up with another ‘morai’ word play.
    
    M: Sorry, right now, I don’t have a comedy- comedy textbook.
    
    K: Ah you don’t. I thought you did.
    
    M: Do they sell those?
    
    N: I looked for one, but I didn’t find any.

  • Coming back Koyama said that during the song Massu had been thinking, but still hadn’t come up with anything. Nori-san said that he’s never seen Massu thinking so seriously before.
    
    The first letter was from a listener who brought up how during the Fukuoka Neverland Concert MC NEWS commented on how the fans don’t jump like they used to during ‘weeeek’. She said that when she jumps her chest really bounces a lot and when she thinks about how the members say things like ‘We can see you all’ during concerts she gets too embarrassed. She wanted to know what she should do.
    
    K: What do you think about boobs?
    
    M: Eh- Ah- um. It’s ok.
    
    (Koyama & Nori-san crack up)
    
    K: Why’d you suddenly get so bad [at talking].
    
    N: What are you a middle schooler?
    
    M: Not at all. (trying to be cool)
    
    K: So sudden.
    
    K: That actually makes you sound more perverted. It’d be cooler to say it smoothly.
    
    M: I’m not really interested. (trying to be cool)
    
    (Nori-san laughs really loudly)
    
    M: Yeah, I don’t really know. What is it that’s bouncing?
    
    K: Her boobs.
    
    M: Oh oh I see.
    
    Koyama then asked Nori-san if he preferred big boobs or small boobs, and Nori-san said that he liked both, and said that he himself has bigger boobs.
    
    Koyama then started to talk about how the time the listener is talking about is probably winter when she’d be wearing a sweater. They talked about how you can see the shape [of someone’s boobs] under the sweater. Massu commented on how he always things about how once they take the sweater off the shape probably remains. Koyama called him a pervert to be thinking about them taking off the sweater, and Massu clarified that he’s thinking about the sweater itself getting stretched out and the shape remaining even after you’ve taken it off. How even once it’s on a hanger the shape of boobs still remain, to which Nori-san and Koyama got excited about.
    
    Koyama explained to Nori-san that they have a song called ‘weeeek’, and Nori-san interjected saying he loves that song, and Koyama went on to explain that when they start the song he always says ‘Let’s go! 1 2 jump!’ The members always jump, but a lot of the fans don’t jump and just pretend to by moving their penlights up and down. Koyama explained that they know they can’t ask the fans to jump through the whole song, but since it’s the song that gets everyone fired up the most and they’d like the fans to at least jump during the first bridge.
    
    N: When they’re jumping girls are concerned about it, right? Guys, their eyes kind of naturally go there, don’t they?
    
    K: To the boobs.
    
    N: Yeah, what should [they] do?
    
    K: It’s fine to look!
    
    N&M: Eh haha
    
    K: I mean, I want to look! I want to see them bouncing! I quite like it.
    
    N: So, what you’re saying to everyone is, ‘let them bounce.’
    
    M: That it’s better to make them bounce.
    
    K: YOU’RE REALLY NOT GOING TO SAY A ‘MORAI’ JOKE!!
    
    Nori-san said that he was thinking he’d have to say it and Massu reassured them that the timing would be good soon. Koyama warned they they were almost out of time, next they’d be going to the ending.

  • The last message was from a listener who said that their friend is like Massu, in that they’re really cool but when they try to say something funny it falls flat. So she wanted to know how to say something good like Shige does and make people laugh.
    
    Massu said that he’s been failing at making a joke since the first letter, they reassured him that he wasn’t. He finally got his joke in using Kuraki Mai’s name probably because it is the same number of syllables and rhymes with ‘chokomorai’ Koyama and Nori-san really loved it, yelling really loudly. He tried again with Ramos Ruy but they told him that one was a bit more of a stretch.
    At the end they did promo for the new album, explaining the concept of it to Nori-san.
    K: The title is Epcotia, it’s a made up word.
    N: What does it mean?
    K: The theme is space travel. Yeah, so in the LE the spaceship, Ekupo-
    M: Oh!
    (Koyama laughs)
    N: What’s wrong?
    K: Eku… Epcotia is pretty hard to say.
    M: Yeah it is.
    Koyama continued to explain it the album concept, while Nori-san and Massu joked around making different rhymes off of ‘Epcotia’. At the end Koyama joined in and they continued to think of different rhymes and getting excited.
