  • At the opening, they talked briefly about how it’s the 333rd episode that day, though it’s not exactly anything special (T: Like, the 101th time?) before moving on to the request segment.
    
    Sakura: It’s not a request today. M: Ehhh? T: No? Sakura: Look, the album’s… T: No we’re not playing “EPCOTIA”. Sakura: Why. It’s the routine to. M: This is Tegomass’ radio! T: Play “Miso Soup”! Sakura: If you’re fine with that I’m fine too! M: Misocoptia! T: Mix them up, mix them up!
    
    Tegoshi said if Sakura wanted to do it that way they’ll play “EPCOTIA”. She said yes, it always goes that way so they played “EPCOTIA”.

  
  

  • ♪ EPCOTIA ♪

  
  

  • The first message was from a listener who wanted to know why the album’s theme got set as space travel. Massu tried to come up with some story of how Tegomass went on a trip to space, but couldn’t think of anything and ended up falling flat halfway. Tegoshi said the music producer called him when he was in the manager’s car and explained the concept plus why he thought space travel would be a good concept for NEWS’ next album. Tegoshi said sure, since the producer’s thought and planned things that far. Massu added that since they had the experience of creating “NEVERLAND” the previous time, when the album and concert were all created for a particular theme, a particular (theme)park, and that probably gave NEWS as well as the staff the confidence to do something conceptual like that. So all of them thought it’d be a pity if that ended at “NEVERLAND” so it’s slightly linked. And since the previous tour started with “N”, the next one’s “E”, isn’t it. Though nobody’s really picturing a tour starting with “W” for the next one. It could be four “N-E-W-S” tours, or something random for the next one, like “P”. The space theme was suggested by the producer.
    
    M: Well, shall we listen to “EPCOTIA” then? T: Ah yeah. Shall we play it full? Sakura: Nonono… T: Let’s do it. Full. Sakura: No. We only have 30 minutes. T: We can’t? Sakura: No.
    
    They tried negotiating to play just parts of the song, but Sakura refused. Tegoshi said it’s the “Jojo pattern”, referring to the phrase “jojo ni” (gradually), but everyone else thought he was referring to the manga “Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure” and he apologised for the confusion. (M: If the two of us had question marks on our heads, ALL the listeners probably reacted the same way too)

  
  

  • The second listener said they were surprised by the announcement of “NEWS ni Koishite” as it was something they didn’t expect, but it’s great how NEWS are unpredictable that way. What kind of application is it, and would they share some behind-the-scenes stories? Tegoshi said they haven’t played it either. They then talked about how the player can probably choose who to fall in love with, though they are not super sure about the details either. They’ve already recorded the audio and taken the photos for the game. Tegoshi talked about how taking the photos were really tough as they were very particular about each expression/ emotion.
    
    T: Well, of course we’ve already been in the industry for 15, 16 years. Just 15, 16 years for me. M: 20 for me! T: That’s long. SEMPA~I!
    
    Tegoshi continued to say how they’ve had to come up with different expressions for magazines each month but this time it was different. Massu said they probably had to do like 4 different smiles, Tegoshi added same goes for anger etc. He also shared how the staff working on the photos were mostly female, since it’s a love application. They talked about how they’re looking forward to it, how they have completely different lines to match their characters, and how the game probably ends up differently depending on the member/ player.
    
    Sakura: And maybe even which member is easiest and which one’s the hardest kind of stuff. M: Like, “There’s zero progress with Masuda!” Sakura: “He keeps talking about clothes” or something.
    
    Tegoshi said the fans probably had enough too. It’s nice to look at the concert costumes once or twice a year and go crazy over them, but nobody really wants to hear the stories about them. (M: Okay~ I’ll take note of that~) There are also phone calls and they hope everyone would look forward to the game.

  
  

  • The third message was from someone who’s graduating from middle school in March. There’s someone they’ve liked since they entered the school, and would like to receive the second button. They’re really nervous since they’ve never done anything like that. Should they say something? If yes, what should they say?
    
    M: Your uniform was the gakuran right? T: Yeah. Gakuran for middle school and blazer for high school. M: Ah I see. Anything like that happened in middle school? T: I was in a boys’ school. Unfortunately. M: But there must be something between the boys too, weren’t there! T: No!
    
    Tegoshi said he often gets told that there must have been a lot of same gender love since it’s a boys’ school, but he didn’t notice anything. Though it might have been because he was still pretty much a country bumpkin back then and didn’t have his antennas up yet.
    
    Massu said his uniform was the blazer type for both middle and high school, so he didn’t have the second button to begin with. (M: Sorry!) He shared how he didn’t manage to go for his graduation ceremony in middle school and went back at a later date to receive his certificate, alone in the principal’s room. Lots of students came and asked for his button then, but his mother had already promised to give his uniform to someone else, so he could only pretend to be cool and say, “Sorry, but I can’t.” Sakura was surprised that how people asked for buttons even for the blazer type uniform too.
    
    On whether the listener should convey their emotions, they said they should, but what to say depends on their character. They asked Sakura for suggestions, and she said usually people would understand what it means when they’re asked for their second button. Tegoshi then added it also depends on whether if they’re happy to just receive the button, or if they want to start dating the person they like too. Tegoshi proposed some lines if they just wanted to button, and Massu suggested to first get the second button, then text to thank the person later. Tegoshi agreed, and that person would definitely be conscious of how the listener is holding on to their second button (M: You’re just stealing my opinion!). Massu continued to say it’s important to move ahead, Tegoshi just echoed him again.
    
    M: OEI! Sakura: Tegoshi-san, this time… T: No I rephrased stuff! Sakura: It’s the same thing! T: You’re suspecting me of stealing his ideas? Sakura: It’s not even stealing, it’s just as it is. “Copy paste”!
    
    They told the listener to do their best and to mail them again after.

  
  

  • For “Quiz! Tegomass ni Oshiete” this week, the first question asked why the doors in Japan open out while doors in Western countries open in. Massu muttered that he’s heard it before, then explained that it’s because the entrances are narrow and they need to remove their shoes before entering, unlike the Western countries. He got that right and Tegoshi protested, saying it’s as if they were quizzed on soccer or clothes. The moment it’s something Massu has heard of before, it’s over. (M: This isn’t about clothes! It’s general knowledge!) Tegoshi tried to make it the practice question. Sakura added that there’s another reason, that Japan is relatively safer and it’s okay to make the doors open out while that would not work in Western countries.

  
  

  • The second question was on the following - cookie, cream puff, waffle, cake.
    
    T: Bread crumbs! Sakura: It’s not about what they have in common. M: And quite a few of them don’t contain bread crumbs.
    
    Going back to the question, among these, which one contains shoyu? Massu got it, cream puff. This is something like a riddle, where the pronunciation for shoyu could refer to either “soy sauce” or “small yu”(小ユ), and the Japanese for cream puff (シュークリーム) contains the little ユ character.
    
    Sakura: Amazing! Masuda-san! What happened today! M: What do you mean what happened, I’m fast each time.
    
    Tegoshi said he’s neither having fun nor upset, because it all ended the moment when he’s about to start ending, so it’s like the competition ended before it even started (M: It’s started!)
    
    Sakura: Do better the next question. Here goes. T: OKAY! Sakura: It hasn’t started yet. This is annoying. (studio laughs)

  
  

  • The third question’s a riddle: what’s something that increases by two, just by removing the cover? Massu got this one right again, albeit using a little bit more time. Apparently everyone outside the studio were clapping. Tegoshi took some time to get it even after Massu announced the answer: The kanji character for “six”六. (Removing the top bit gives you the kanji for eight八.) Tegoshi said it’s as if he’s just there as a viewer. And just have to react, like watching tv while eating t home. His part for the episode ended at reading the mails.

• Masuda Takahisa no Master Hits (Mar 9)

  
  

  • At the opening, he talked about how he ate 3 servings of gyoza plus fried rice just before the recording for this episode started. There are 6 gyozas in each serving, but he only managed to finish 12. The staff sounded a little miffed and said he only needed 2 servings after all, so he asked the manager to eat the remaining 6 gyozas. In conclusion, there was no waste of food! He then said it’s been a while he ate gyoza, but realised it’s probably the third time he’s had gyoza this year, mostly in the form of take-outs from places near work.

  
  

  • The first listener asked if Massu prefers vegetables raw or grilled. He likes both, but prefers them raw, in chopped salad form.

  • The second message was from someone who’s looking forward to Massu’s solo song this year. He teased the listeners by saying it’s either like the previous ballad style like “FOREVER MINE” or the super dancy type like “LIS’N”. The staff told him the song title has already been announced, and he asked everyone to look forward to “THUNDER”, to see if it’s a gentle or aggressive thunder.

  
  

  • The third message was from someone who recently counted all her belongings to find out which item she owned the most. It turned out to be nail polish, which she has 47 bottles of. What does Massu own the most? He commented that 47 bottles is quite a lot, and that must fill up an entire drawer. If they’re all from the same brand, they can all be stored neatly away, but if they’re from different brands, it might be harder to keep them organised. As for what he owns the most, he first joked that it might be cotton buds or toothpicks, since there’re so many of them in one container. He apologised for the joke, then said it’s like Tshirts, though he left it up to everyone to imagine how many he owns.

  
  

  • The fourth message was from someone who wanted to know if it’s scary when the lifting stages at concerts get lowered? He said those aren’t scary as those are usually locked from the bottom. They can get a little scary if you climb onto them when they’re unlocked though, as they shift. While they might be scary if you looked at them as individual rides, but when the actual concert begins, it isn’t that scary. Except the lifters that extend real high. Those are scary. And the balloons they had once in the past. He shared again the story from when they held the concert in Taiwan. When they appeared from a transparent stage from maybe about 40 meters above. Everyone was real scared, even from the rehearsals. It’s like those clear spots in Tokyo Tower where you can look through to see what’s below. Except it’s ALL transparent. And it gets lowered super slowly. Since then, all of NEWS were traumatised and they never had transparent stages again.

  
  

  • The fifth message was from someone who baths really early - by 5pm on days when they’re home all day, and before dinner if they’d to go to school or their part-time job. What time does Massu bath on days he’s home all day? He said it’s good to bath early, as the usual image is bathing just before sleeping, and some people might find it a bother. He does that too, so he bathes pretty late usually. If he’s home all day, it depends. If he’s already bathed the night before, and stays home the entire day doing nothing much, he might just wait till the following morning before he showers.
    
    M: Is that dirty? (laughs) But well, I might, might bathe at night.
    
    He continued to say if he’s really just doing nothing much, and just watching DVDs and stuff, he might just fall asleep like that.
    
    M: People usually bathe at night even under such circumstances? Hmm… but it’s more idol-like to say I bathe, isn’t it. Yeah I do. Around 5pm.
    
    He said again that he thinks it’s great the listener bathes early and that might be better for sleeping well too.

  
  

  • ♪ Sakura Girl - represent NEWS mix- ♪

  
  

  • For Brainmaster this week, the question was: The current plastic bags come with handles, but they didn’t used to when they first came to Japan. It’s a particular fruit that sparked off plastic bags with handles. What fruit was it? He made a few wrong guesses, including spring onions (Translator note: Hello, fruit????), apples, pineapples, oranges, peaches, cherries, before asking for the answer - nashi pear. The plastic bags with handles got inspired from how females who go nashi pear picking kept having their stockings caught in the weaved baskets. The plastic bags with handles for this purpose got really popular and started being used in supermarkets too.
    
    M: Hehhhh~ then apples are pretty much the same, aren’t they. Nashi pears huh… didn’t I say that? No? You sure?
