Sorashige Book (Apr 22)
The first message was from a listener who said that she’s hooked on NEWS ni Koishite. She wrote about how she likes hearing Shige say ‘Otsukare (Good work)’ when they open the app. They commented on how busy Shige is and encouraged him not to over do it.
Shige said he was happy to hear it, and noted that his story hasn’t come out yet and said he wasn’t sure when it would and said to look forward to it. He also talked about Typewriters and how it’s started. He said he’s thankful for it and asked everyone to watch. He also mentioned NEWcoupleS.The next letter was from a listener who said that Matsumura Hokuto from SixTones performed Shige’s solo ‘Ayame’ in their Jr Matsuri show. They wanted to know what Shige thought of his kohai performing his songs. They said that as a NEWS fan they’re really happy to see jrs performing NEWS songs on Shonen Club.
Shige said that he had heard about Hokuto performing his song and that on the magazine message boards too recently he had reached out to Shige saying that he’s been hooked on his song. Shige said that since the world view in his songs is really strong it’s probably hard for others to do them. He had heard that Hokuto might do his song, though he hasn’t seen his performance. He noted that if Hokuto did it on Shonen Club he’d be able to see it. He said he was glad, and said he was curious why he chose to do it and encouraged other jrs to try his solos. He said that soon he’d like to talk about Hyouon.♪ UFO ♪
For music club this week Shige said that he wants to talk about his solo.
The first letter was from a listener writing to give their thoughts on Hyouon. They talked about how much they liked it and that they’re looking forward to how it’ll be performed on stage. They said they were surprised by the woman’s voice that says Hyouon at the end, and that they would like him to explain his solo if he can.The next letter was also about Shige’s solo and they talked about how much they liked Epcotia and that they were really curious to see what kind of solo Shige would do after Ayame. They said that Hyouon might be their favorite Shige solo yet. They also said they were surprised by the voice at the end, and asked if there’s a special meaning behind it.
The next letter was also about Hyouon. They talked about how they knew Hyouon would be amazing from the moment they heard the title, and when they heard it it was even better than they imagined. They said that they want him to make a music video for it like he did for Escort. They’re looking forward to seeing the performance so much that they can’t sleep.
The next letter was also about Hyouon. They said that Epcotia was really good and might even surpass Neverland. They’re really excited for the tour. They said that they always look forward to Shige’s solos, and they really like Hyouon too. They wrote about what they like about Hyouon. They also asked Shige to explain the solo.
Shige said that he would start from the lyrics. He said that during the tour last year he would drink some shochu in his hotel room after concerts. He wouldn’t drink a lot since it was mid tour, and he would split it with water, but that way he’d end up drink the whole time not knowing when to stop. But one time when he was adding ice, it was melting and fell on the table.
He doesn’t remember what location it was, but he didn’t feel like picking it up maybe because he was tired. So he decided that he would just drink until it had completely melted. Then he thought it was an interesting idea, like applying the idea of a sandglass to ice. That was when he thought he’d like to make his solo for the next year have the theme of ice.
Ayame had been about humanity and diversity, and this time he thought that he wanted to write a love song. While you could call Dreamcatcher and Escort love songs, he wanted to write a more raw love song. If was going to do the opposite of Ayame, he thought something like this would be good, he started with that idea for the lyrics.
He also wanted to use fewer words. Usually he always has some rap in his songs because he has a lot he wants to say and can’t fit it all in otherwise. This time he wanted minimal words and melody. He wanted to depict a breakup. He ended up liking the lyrics ‘kagamigoshi no kimi wa shiranai kao wo shiteiru’ and ‘Kimi no taion ga hebaritsuita mama’. This time rather than present something, he more wanted to have others use their imagination in between the lines, so there might be people who find it lacking too. He didn’t try to put any of his own individuality into it, or focus on making ‘something that only he could’. Though in the end when he showed it to the producer they said that it was very Shige.
He was pretty busy so he didn’t have a whole lot of time to play around with the music as much, but he bought a keyboard and was thinking of doing it with a piano. Then he started to think about how he wanted to sing it, and his producer suggested using a Rhodes Piano. Shige wanted a sound like a piano being played from an old cassette tape, a kind of quiet sound. He also wanted to an adult sound to his singing, to sing in a way that he can’t in NEWS.
He talked about working with someone on the arrangement, and during the time of recording the arrangement wasn’t finished yet. He also had to decide on the final version of the lyrics because they needed to go on the CD booklet.
He always likes to play around and decide things as he records. They worked up til the very end, at first it just ended with ‘Don’t believe in me’ but he felt like it lacked something so he played around with it a little, so they had Ami, the same person who sang in the chorus of Ayame, do a few different recordings of her voice and eventually decided on her saying ‘Hyouon’ at the end.
Shige said that though some might find it scary, they picked the least scary sounding one. Though if you think it’s scary and get a chill, that’s fine because it is called Hyouon after all.
He said that this year he was a bit more involved in the arrangement than usual and the track down. He also praised the staff. He said that this year too he felt like he wants someone else to sing his solo, because he feels like the type of song he wants to listen to doesn’t suit his voice. He said he mainly wants to convey how hard he worked on his solo.
Regarding the title, Shige said that at first he didn’t know the word ‘Hyouon’ but when thinking about the temperature of ice he wondered if it existed and if it didn’t then he was thinking he’d just use it as a made up word. So he looked it up and saw that it meant the temperature right before it froze and thought that that was good too.
He said that it seems that people have confused about the performance too but that that’s fine that was his strategy. He asked that everyone interpret it as they like.♪ Hyouon ♪
Kchan NEWS (Apr 24)
The guest this week was Tegoshi.
Koyama introduced Tegoshi and Emma who was also in the studio with them, both Koyama and Tegoshi immediately breaking into baby voices.
They then talked about how they had just finished the Shizuoka performances and the Fukuoka ones are coming up (as of the time of recording) and that things are going well. The first message was from a listener who said that they were really curious what the members’ routines were before a concert.
Tegoshi said that since they really dance a lot this tour, he likes to go run to get his heart beat up once beforehand. Koyama noted that it’s true he noticed that Tegoshi disappears for a bit, and Tegoshi told him it’s because he’s running.
Koyama said that they have an order they go in to get makeup done. Koyama gets his done about an hour and a half before the show, then when he’s finished he switches out with Tegoshi. Koyama’s done prep about an hour before the show, so he does body care after that, and then puts on his tattoos. Hearing that Tegoshi began to sing the t.A.T.u. song, ‘All the Things She Said’.
T: The Music Station boycott incident!
K: Ah that tATu! That’s so nostalgic!
The song began to play in the background as Koyama and Tegoshi continued to talk. They talked about how though they often went out to eat together and went to the jr’s rooms last year, this year they haven’t bee n able to at all, because the tour is so physically taxing. Tegoshi said that he hasn’t drank anything beyond the beer for the cheers the first night. Tegoshi said that this is the first time he’s completely quit playing soccer and futsal during a tour.♪ EPCOTIA ♪
The next letter was from a listener who said that they finished one round of Tegoshi’s route. They talked about how much they like the game and that it’s made them like Tegoshi even more. They said the members seem like themselves in the game.
Tegoshi said that first GREE came up with the lines, and they changed the parts where the phrasing sounded completely different to how they would talk in real life.
K: This is quite recent, but I messaged Tegoshi yesterday.
T: Yeah, you did. You started dating me right?
K: Yeah. Or rather Tegoshi confessed [his feelings] to me.
T: (burst out laughing)
K: I have a screenshot of it.
T: You sent it to me.
K: I signed up using the name ‘Keiichiro’. So, he calls me ‘Keiichiro’.
T: Right right.
K: He said, ‘Keiichiro, I’ll love you today, tomorrow, and forever more.’
T: Right right.
K: Thank you, he’s my boyfriend now.
T: We’ve begun an unbelievable relationship. We’re in a relationship.
K: (laughing non-stop)
T: To everyone out there, sorry but let me announce that we are in a relationship.
K: Tegoshi Yuya is the boyfriend, and Koyama Keiichiro is the girlfriend. Since I chose Keiichiro, everyone calls me that.
T: This doesn’t happen often, a Japanese idol announcing their relationship. Everyone, I have an important announcement, I would like to announce our relationship.
(both crack up)
K: Yeah, I sent [the screencap] to Tegoshi last night, how funny.
…
K: Our romance will continue to progress.
T: Yes, into an intimate relationship. The next message was from a listener who said that they watched Tegoshi on ‘Sukatto Japan’. Tegoshi played the role of an awful boyfriend who is simultaneously dating 3 women. They wanted to know what they really think about men who simultaneously date 3 women.
They commented on how it’d be difficult enough to date 2 women, let alone 3, you have to be clever and popular with women. Tegoshi said that the situation in the drama was that he had one long distance relationship and then 2 girlfriends in the same city.
Tegoshi said that when filming, the set kept bursting out in laughter, he added in a bunch of adlibs while filming. Tegoshi said that that kind of role is interesting for him because in real life he’s devoted and unstylish. Koyama said that he couldn’t deny that he’s devoted but that he’s no longer unstylish.
T: The world thinks, ‘Ah that guy is unstylish, pure, and devoted.’
K: If so, then you’re really misunderstanding the world.
T: (bursts out laughing) Oh really?
Tegoshi continued to joking insist that he follows the rules that his sempai have set and Koyama protested saying that Tegoshi has created his own route in the entertainment world, started his own revolution to the point that people question whether he’s actually in Johnny’s.
T: Now, ‘♪Ai no Matadoru ♪’
K: No, it’s not.The next letter was from a 2nd year in highschool who said that the rules in their house are too strict. Their curfew is 7pm, they have to go to bed at 9, they can’t record TV shows, no makeup. Since they have to be in bed by 9 and they can’t record TV shows, they can’t watch NEWS shows. When they try to talk to their parents, they won’t listen. They wanted to know how they can live more freely.
Koyama and Tegoshi were both shocked by all the rules. Tegoshi said that if you restrict your kid too much, telling them they can’t do anything, they won’t be able to adapt to today’s world. They commented on how it’ll be hard for the letter writer to change it. Tegoshi wondered why they were being restricted so much, and Koyama said that it was probably because the parents are worried. If he were a father and didn’t want his daughter to get a boyfriend, then having her back at home by 7 would put him at ease.
Tegoshi said that he completely understood that worry, but that [if he were a parent] since he knows that restricting them like that wouldn’t be good for the child’s education, he wouldn’t do it. He said that they might end up raising a kid that never got to develop social skills. They wouldn’t be able to communicate well, or know about computers or TV, or have things in common with others. The daughter will be the one who might get excluded from things or bullied for that. He thinks that the parents should properly think about how it could harm their daughter.
He added that’s just his opinion, but that the principle of the household should be respected.♪ TWINKLE STAR ♪
The last letter was from a 3rd year junior high school student who joined the table tennis club. They said that when they hit the ball they say ‘Ya!’ but asked that they think up something that leaves more of an impression.
They acted out table tennis and Tegoshi came up with the sound ‘Meoooooow!’ in a high pitched voice. They said that it’ll make their opponent hesitate and wonder what’s up with them and they continued to talk about strategies for a while.
Tegoshi started to come up with other other sounds despite Koyama’s protests that he didn’t need to.
T: GAHHHHH!
K: How scary! Emma are you ok? This is what it’s like at home?
Koyama asked if he’s like this at home too, and Tegoshi said that he’s always talking and then started to talk to Emma in a baby voice again as an example of what he’s like at home. He said that his mother has started making noises like he does, too.
