  • Tegomass no Radio (Apr 25)

    • At the opening, they talked about how it’s going to be Golden Week next week and they’re finally going to perform at Osaka, where MBS is based at. Tegoshi then joked about how Massu leaked urine during the concert. (M: During the concert?) Tegoshi explained that they are split into KoyaShige and Tegomass for their areas for changing costumes.

T: He leaked about 3-4 times beside me.

M: I have more important things to do than that!

T: I really find it amazing! There are many different beverages, water, sports drinks...but you’re drinking coffee, aren’t you? Doesn’t that make you want to go?

M: I mean, I’m an idol, what are you talking about?

Tegoshi said he’s the type who needs to go proportionately to the amount of liquids he takes in. So he goes like once every 30 minutes or something. And coffee speeds that process up, so he avoids coffee at the movies.

T: It’s amazing, how he drinks coffee backstage.

M: Yupyup. Grind the beans and make coffee.

T: Nonono...from the famous coffee chain that you love so much.

M: Ah, so I don’t grind the beans.

T: The one you’re ALWAYS drinking. Even in this studio.

Sakura: Ah, the bigger sized ones?

M: Yeah. I drink the same during concerts.

They talked about they really need to keep hydrated this tour, and they’re probably drinking about 2 litres each, for each concert. They heard from the staff later that they drank 4 litres each at outdoor concerts. As they perspire lots, they don’t really need to go to the toilet.

M: No, for me, even when I drink 4 litres, it’s like, “What’s the toilet?”

T: Ahhh, it comes out from your mouth?

      Sakura: Like, “urgh”.

      T: That’s right.

They then talked about how Tegoshi read the title for “NEWCoupleS” wrong when they promoted it before, reading it as “New Couple S” instead of “New Couples”, like it should be. They talked about this during the MC and there wasn’t much response from the audience, though everyone at TM radio laughed so much. It seems Tegomass jokes don’t get through to KoyaShige sometimes. (studio laughs)

M: But it’s true isn’t it, that there’s this “KoyaShige” sense of humour.

Tegoshi then shared here too, on how Koyama sent him the screen capture of Tegoshi confessing to Koyama on NEWS ni Koishite, and asked what he should do. Tegoshi replied he’d think about it.

T: He sends these things I don’t know how to respond to. And to share something exclusive here, there was once when I got close to Koyama in the dressing room when no one else was around - no manager, no staff, no KatoMassu. Like, “hey hey”. He rejected me completely. He placed himself high up there at that time, so I told him that I won’t accept someone who refused the completely naked me. That’s his level of member-ai.

Sakura: You exchange such mails among members?

T: Yeah he texted me at about 9pm.

      M: That’s gross.

      Sakura: It’s scary.

Tegoshi said it’s too bad that Koyama’s spending money on him but it’s just Koyama’s one-sided love.

    • Moving on to the request from someone who started high school this spring. They’re more unsure than excited in the entirely new environment, and can’t help but get reminded of the teacher they liked very much back in middle school each time they see their teacher in high school. Their elder sister also left home to stay at the dorm in Hokkaido this spring. It is “HAPPY ENDING” that gives them strength and tells them that everyone is really still around for them. They will also be attending their first concert ever in their life and is looking forward to it. Both Tegoshi and Massu said they’re happy to be able to meet the listener soon and they’ll get happy then. Since their concerts are usually held in spring, all of them work with the intention of bringing strength to people who’re starting out the new phases of their lives. They talked a little about how things really change once you enter high school, as most public schools offer elementary up till middle school, and high school is when the environment changes majorly for the first time. It’s also when some of them start working part-time to earn their own pocket money and all. Tegoshi said he became NEWS when he was in the first year of high school and that was a huge change.

Sakura: And this is how you turned out to be…

T: Wait, hang on, is that a positive or negative comment?

Sakura: Positive, so if you’d take it positively…

      T: Ah, I’m glad.

M: So you didn’t mean it in the “I wish you hadn’t changed” way?

Sakura: (in a tiny voice) Well that…

T: My mental age hasn’t changed since! In fact, it might have gotten younger since I became NEWS!

      Sakura: That’s problematic. What happened.

      T: Dunno. DUNNO!

M: Please return to that moment, to not forget when you first started-

      T: I haven’t forgotten that! That’s why I get progressively childish, isn’t it.

Sakura: No, it’s because you remember when you first started that you properly behave.

M: To remember when you first started and grow as you go along.

    • The second mail was from someone who wanted to know if they would pick up phone calls before other people, as they find it embarrassing for their conversation to be heard and would usually leave the room to answer their phone calls. Massu first commented how Tegoshi doesn’t make many phone calls, before saying how none of them really makes phone calls. They also talked about how there’s this JE staff who’s always on the phone, but never picks up when they call them. The likelihood of that staff picking up the call at first try is less than 5%, and they always return the call when NEWS members can’t pick up. NEWS members will call back again, not get through again, and the cycle repeats about twice before they finally get through. And that stuff will apologise, and keep saying “I was so busy, so busy...sorry I missed your call” Who are they talking to on the phone all the time?

T: I don’t really like phone calls. Like, there are people who choose to call instead of text. I text all the time, and don’t like how my time gets taken up by just one person.

M, Sakura: WHOOOAAAAA…. Quote of the day!

T: For texts, you can text 10 people in a jiffy and get replies too, isn’t it? But with phone calls, it’s just that one person at one time. It’s fine if it’s someone I like, like my family. But to have time my taken by just one person, nope.

M: Ah, so if there are 10 friends you’re talking to about the same thing, soccer or something. And if one of them calls, you’d think, “Why do I have to talk to you?”

      T: It’s troublesome.

M: Thank you. I think it’s better if we let him go home for the day. There’s nothing more we can talk about.

Sakura: It’s turned into the mood when “Tegoshi belongs to everyone”.

T: No no, it’s just how the world moves at a really fast pace, and it’s fine to just text isn’t it.

Sakura: It’s not as if that person called with the intention of having you all to themselves.

T: That’s true, but I just don’t like how my limited time gets spent on just one person. Like, “Choose a more productive method!” For example, it’s okay to call if you’re at the meeting place and can’t find each other.

Tegoshi asked how the other two felt about phone calls, and they’ve never felt that way ever. Tegoshi said Horiemon said the same thing in his book! And said it’s also better to text as then he can reply at his own time and not get interrupted, say in the middle of his game. Though Sakura-chan wouldn’t understand since she has no friends.

Sakura: Don’t say something so rude! Though it’s true that I only receive calls from like my manager.

      T, M: Hahaha.

Tegoshi said he doesn’t get many calls either and the last call he received was probably from (Miyagawa) Daisuke-san, inviting him to play golf. But Tegoshi’s not around on weekends these days and Daisuke-san said he’d invite him again.

Massu said it’s not that he hates phone calls or anything, just that he doesn’t really make them. They concluded that all of them don’t make phone calls very much, other than for urgent issues.

    • For “Tegomass no Battle” this week, they first had to do a MBS quiz sent in by a listener, who wrote that they should be able to get it all right, since they’ve been hosting the MBS programme for 6.5 years. They had to write their answers down to the following 3 questions.

Q1: Which prefecture is the head office for MBS located?

      Q2: The frequency for MBS

Q3: MBS in Japanese is xx Housou. What’s the “xx”?

They both got the first question right, Tegoshi got the second wrong (It’s 1179, what Sakura always reads at the ending) and both got the final one wrong (Mainichi Housou). They blamed the last question for being a bad one, as MBS was short for “Mainichi Broadcasting System” in English and nothing to do with the Japanese.

    • The second battle had them saying “EPCOTIA” quickly, taking turns to say it and increasing the number each turn. Tegoshi went first. When it was Massu’s turn at saying 10 Epcotias, they said he started pronouncing the last 3 or so as “Ep-co-teh-ah” but he said it wasn’t as if he stumbled on the words. Tegoshi said it’s like how his grandma pronounces JR as “zay”R and no “jay”R. They couldn’t decide if that meant Massu lost, and asked Tegoshi to first try saying “Epcotia” 11 times. Tegoshi burst out laughing at the first one and he lost.

    • At the end, they promoted the tour, and NEWS ni Koishite. They got reminded of how Sakura and Taro were supposed to be playing and they were.

      Taro: I got saved.

T: What do you mean, you got saved?

Taro: I got hit on, and Tegoshi-san came to save me. (studio bursts out laughing)

Moving on to Sakura, she said she’s doing her best to proceed, but is stuck because she doesn’t have enough joshiryoku (femininity). So she’s doing her best to up her femininity. (laughter in studio again) Tegoshi said he’ll start playing soon.

      Sakura: It’s pretty hard though.

T: It is? If I play myself it’d probably be okay?

M: Tegoshi should be easy, isn’t it?

T: Why. It’s not like I’m some easy guy.

      M: He should be easy.

T: I’ve got pretty high hurdles to clear!

M: His story probably finishes in like 3 episodes or something.

T: There are about 100 episodes! Longer than Doraemon!

M: Ah so it turns out you came from the future?

T: Uh huh, from the 25th Century.

They told everyone to please have fun in the game.

  • Masuda Takahisa no Masterhits (Apr 27)

    • At the opening, he talked about how they’re now past the midway mark of the EPCOTIA, since they’ve completed 4 out of 8 venues. It’s based on an album themed around space travel, and he thinks they’ve managed to create a space that’s NEWS-like. To those who will be coming for the upcoming concerts, please look forward to it.

    • The first listener was someone who likes sweet potatoes as much as they like Massu. Does Massu prefer stone baked sweet potatoes or sweet potato tempura? He chose stone baked sweet potatoes, as he always feels happy to see the stone baked sweet potatoes along the streets. He also sang a couple of lines from the stone baked sweet potatoes gag by comedians Henderson, whom he’s collaborated with before on Chara Parade.

    • ♪ EPCOTIA ♪

    • The second mail came from someone who walks about 10 thousand steps a day and wanted to know the number of steps Massu walks. Massu checked the app on his phone and for that day, he’s walked a grand total of...1,238 steps. Which translates to 0.8km.

      M: I’ve travelled so far~ Hurhurhurhurhurhurhur...

He was half perplexed why the figure felt so small, and realised that there were times when he left his phone in the holding room during recordings so it’s not quite accurate. If it’s average to walk 10 thousand steps a day, he’s completely on a different level.

M: Sorry about that. I’ll walk lots tomorrow. I’ll walk home~ (hur)

    • The third mail is from a listener whose best friend would be leaving for some place far away soon. They can’t help but start crying when they imagine having to send their friend off at the airport. They hope to be able to send the friend off, smiling, but what should they do. Also, does Massu have any suggestions for a gift they can get for their friend? He said he’s never experienced anyone close to him moving far away, but thinks it’s perfectly fine to cry. What matters is to convey their feelings, so he’s sure their friend would be happy, whether or not it’s smiles or tears. As to what to give… if it was for a graduation, people would collect messages on a board. He’s ever received those and was so happy he displayed it in his room after that. Something like this, a collection of messages or photo album would be nice. Just a few years back, compiling some of your favourite songs on an original MD would have been nice. Even earlier, it would have been on cassette tapes. If that idea is translated to the current era, it would be what, on a USB drive?

M: In the past, well, not that I’m from a generation that long ago, but giving an MD felt somewhat stylish. Giving a USB drive feels very “data”-ish.

He thinks it’d be nice to give something original, like a letter or giving a photo with messages scribbled on it. Maybe a photo of the two of them, with a message from the listener. Frame it up, and give it to the friend for them to display. Though it might be a “Master Hits” thing to suggest printing the photo on a mug. He also shares how he sometimes receives photos from his friends and he’s happy.

    • The fourth mail was from someone who attended the Shizuoka concert and talked about the compass from the goods line up. They’ve liked looking at maps since they were young and was really happy about the compass. Massu shared how he’s been suggesting making a compass for concert goods since years ago. Since their group name emcompasses the hope of them getting popular North, South, East, West, and it’s something only NEWS can make, he’s always wanted to make a compass. While he’s suggested it each year, there were times when all of them were against the idea, saying, “No, not this time.” But this year, since the theme was space travel, he’s finally gotten the ok to make it. Since the compass is made with a carabiner, like a keychain, it can be carried everywhere. He looked through LOTS of materials and how it’d be easiest to use and he’s intending to buy like 20 of them since he’s the type who buys lots of whatever he likes. He hopes to make something compass related regularly, and thanked the listener as they seemed to have purchased the compass.

    • The fifth mail was also from someone who attended the Shizuoka concert and that their two sons (a first-grader and a kindergarten kid) fell in love with the penlight and can’t stop playing with it. They wish for more kid-friendly concert goods in the future, and asked what Massu would make if he had a choice. He said it’d be nice if the goods are things both children and adults could use. Thinking about what everyone would have wanted when they were young… transformation stuff? Tricyles? But since it’s NEWS it has to be a four-wheeler. Or one of those luxurious cars for children? That’s it. A special NEWS car for children. Though that’d become something that only children would appreciate. He’d think about it! Thank you.

    • The sixth mail was from a listener who’d be registering their marriage with their boyfriend of six years. (M: Congratulations!) She’s been receiving power from NEWS’ songs even before she got together with her boyfriend, and is thankful. She’s going to continue supporting NEWS and Massu, and would be attending the Saitama concert. Massu congratulated her again, and said he’s happy she’s been listening to their songs and coming to the concert. While it feels a little strange sometimes, he’s always happy and grateful to hear stories of how their songs work into the daily lives of people, like encouraging them along etc. Since she’s getting married soon, he chose to play the wedding song that came into his head for her.

    • ♪ Hanamuke ♪

    • For Masterpiece this week, he played “IT’S YOU”. He talked about how this song was produced by m-flo’s Taku and LISA with lyrics written by SAKURA. In the previous album, “BRIGHTEST” was made in a similar pattern. As a singer, he’s happy to have received a song like this and it feels like a grade up to be able to sing such songs. It’s an extremely hard song to sing, to properly express the song while keeping the groove. During the recording, he tried to imagine how LISA-san would sing it. The singing parts are also divided like how the recent NEWS songs are, with the Tegoshi singing main vocals for the first chorus and KoyaShige harmonising, and Massu singing main vocals for the second chorus and KoyaShige harmonising. So the impression changes completely each chorus. He hasn’t heard the comments from Taku and LISA about the completed song yet, and is looking forward to hearing them.

    • At the ending, he expressed regret of revealing how he only walked a thousand odd steps today honestly and the listeners must have gone, “HUH?”. He’d like to walk lots around Hiroshima, while holding the compass in one hand.
