Sorashige Book (Oct 28)
Shige commented on how they had some announcements recently and there were a lot of letters to the radio this week.
The first letter was from a listener who congratulated them on the dome concerts. They said that they cried they were so happy when they heard. They also talked about how Shige must be really busy going straight from drama filming to concert rehearsals, and to take care of himself
The next letter was from a listener who said that they were surprised by the announcement and thanked him for making so many opportunities to see NEWS this year.
The next letter was from a listener who congratulated them on and thanked them for the dome concerts and encouraged him to look after his health.
Shige said talked about the dome concerts and how they would be called ‘Epcotia Encore’ but that they’re still in meetings to decide the contents of the concerts. He said that it wouldn’t be the same as the arena tour, they would have to adjust it to a Dome version, and they also want to add in some 15th anniversary elements. They want to try and combine the conceptual world view with a strong musical element to create something different from both Epcotia and Strawberry. Shige also talked about the ‘Inugamike no Ichizoku’ drama, and how he didn’t think he’d do anymore acting this year after ‘Zero’, but he was really glad to get this job and of course also feels how big the responsibility is to play such a famous and iconic role. He said he was really surprised and is excited. He said that he’s studying up every day, watching other Kindaichis and reading the original works. The filming is still a bit in the future, but he’ll have filmed the drama and it will have aired before the new year concerts, so every day has been very fulfilling this year and he’s happy and grateful. He’s also writing a bit as he has some leeway now, and wants to power through what he can now gearing up for the new year.♪ ‘Ikiro’ ♪
For music club this week he talked about Anderson .Paak who is a hip hop artist/rapper. He talked about his artist profile for awhile and his rise to fame. He mentioned how he used to be homeless and his mother has Korean ancestry. He played his song ‘TINTS ft.Kendrick Lamar’.
The next letter was from a listener who said that they still miss zero everyday, and that they enjoyed his discussion of Strawberry from the previous week. They said that they have a question about LVE lyrics, after the line “‘tsuyoku musubitsuita kizuna’ da” they can hear a voice saying something, but it’s not written on the lyics card. They wanted to know what’s being said. They think it might be ‘Ikou’ or ‘Ikiro’, at first they didn’t notice but after listening to the song with earphones thought ‘Eh, is this a ghost?’ and they’re curious what it is.
Shige said that they were correct, it’s not written in the lyrics, but he’s saying ‘Ikou’ (Let’s go). The producer told him to say it, and there are other examples in other songs too where they say things that aren’t included in the lyrics and he personally likes these kinds of lines that are said unaffectedly. The next letter was from a listener who said that they have a question about the picture segment of the radio [note: at the end of each radio show Shige asks for listeners to send in photos on a theme. The current theme is ‘Blue 2018’ and you can see the pictures picked here]. They asked if Shige is the one to pick the pictures that get chosen and comment on them.
Shige said that he does comment on them. He picks and writes his comment after recording the radio show each week. He encouraged everyone to keep sending them. He said that he’s gotten in the habit of taking photos with his smartphone since cameras are heavy and he doesn’t really take many pictures unless he travels somewhere. He recently got a new camera, a Contax T2, it’s an older model but it’s light and easy to use. He was always interested in them and hoped he would come upon one, and he would go to used camera fairs fairly often, but he suddenly started to really want one and he hadn’t been able to go to one recently. The prices were just getting higher, and it’s being sold at about the same price as it was when it was new. He talked about how there’s been an uptick of interest in cameras generally and he felts that he didn’t want to lose his passion for it. The picture for ‘Miacis Symphony’ in anan is picked by a photographer and he shows pictures to Shige and when he looked at their Instagram he thought their photos were fantastic and didn’t want to lose to them. He hasn’t used his new camera yet, but he has it and wants to work hard on it again.♪ Higher Ground ♪

T: AaaaAAAuuuUUggHHh (mimicing a zombie for a full 10 seconds)
K:That’s the ‘Walking Dead’!

They talked about how it’s Halloween and Koyama asked Tego if he was dressing up at all this year and Tego said that he wasn’t, he didn’t do anything and Koyama said it was the same for him. They talked about how in recent years Halloween has gotten bigger than Christmas in Japan. They both agreed that didn’t feel like doing anything big, the best was to dress up and drink with close friends at home was the best rather than going wild. They also said that girls were great no matter what the costume, mentioning nurse costumes in particular.♪ Cascade ♪
The first letter was from a listener who said that through NEWS they’ve made friends from all over Japan and they always promise to meet up at concerts. (T: Wonderful K: Amazing) They said that even people they’re pretty close with online they don’t really know what to talk about once they meet face to face. They said that they’re from Osaka, and there’s image of people from there being funny but she can’t- then mid-sentence Tegoshi sneezed and scared Koyama making him yell. Koyama finished reading the letter where they asked how they can learn to say funny things like Tegoshi.
Koyama said that he thought it was fine that they don’t say funny things, and Tegoshi agreed saying that even comedians don’t constantly say funny things in their private lives, and he doesn’t constantly do ‘Tei!’ in his private time either. Though he’ll do it on request. He said that it’s ok it have ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’ and that not all Kansai people will overreact and play into jokes. It may be true that there’s more people like that in Kansai, but there are people who aren’t as well. They told her not to worry about it.
Koyama talked about how the letter writer talked about these are friends she only knows online through her love of NEWS and Tegoshi said that since they have that in common, the hurdle of making conversation isn’t that high. They said they were happy to hear about that. The next letter was from a listener who brought up how Tegoshi often bites Koyama. And did a survey of the different reasons why people who like to bite do it.
K: The first [reason], I don’t think this is it, but to release stress. You want to diffuse frustration.

They talked about how funny it was that they’re in their 30s still doing this, and Tegoshi noted how he’s turning 31 soon. Tegoshi said that when Halloween’s close that means his birthday is right after, and right after that is Christmas, and right after that the new year.♪ Byakuya ♪
The last letter was from a listener who said that their older sister bought a snake toy, and even though they know it’s just a toy they’re so scared they can’t go near it. They wanted to know if there’s anything like that where even though they know [it’s not real] they get scared anyway.
They wondered over this and Tegoshi said he thought he’d be ok with a cockroach toy, if someone surprised him with it he’d yell and be surprised, but be fine once he realized it was just a toy. Koyama agreed, and then said that he has an ETC card [a card used to pay highway tolls] in his car and even though he knows it’s there he gets worried every time he drives on the highway if it’s really there. Tegoshi asked why since it beeps if it’s not in properly, and Koyama said that it’s because he’s been doing carsharing.
They talked about cockroaches a bit and how scary they are.The next letter was from a listener who said that they didn’t like yakiniku, but when their friends group goes out in a large group they tend to go to yakiniku, so they’ve stopped going. They asked them to tell them what’s so great about yakiniku.
Tegoshi wondered what they don’t like about yakiniku, if it’s the flavor or the smokey atmosphere, and Koyama wondered if it’s how heavy the food is saying that if they don’t like the food they could still go but not eat. Koyama and Tegoshi both said that they go.
Tegoshi brought up how whenever they’re deciding where to go Massu always says really confidently ‘Well, the 4 of us don’t really like yakiniku, so a japanese or fish restaurant would be better’ He says it really loudly and Tegoshi said though he does like those types of places too, he always thinks in his head “I really like yakiniku though…’ and Koyama said that he does too. So they announced to Massu that they both like meat and want to go to yakiniku. They talked about that some more and Koyama revealed that when they went to a grill place previously, Massu ate a lot of meat. They said that they both go to yakiniku fairly regularly. They said that they didn’t know how Shige feels about it but that he would go along with whatever, and they said they’d like to go with the staff sometime, be able to talk with everyone around the grill.
They said that they both could go eat yakiniku now and are hungry and talked about going after this.At the end they wished everyone a Happy Halloween.
Tegomass no Radio (Oct 31)
At the opening, they talked about it being the 7th anniversary episode of the programme. Tegomass no Radio started on Oct 26, 2011, when Tegoshi was 23 years old and Massu 25. It was only broadcasted on one station back then, but on four stations now. Tegoshi said how they’ve been sincerely reply to all the listeners’ questions etc. Sakura said she’s not sure about that, but she’s given up on them about being calm, so just keep going that way. They said they’re sure she’ll be sad if they really became calm, but she didn’t agree. They then said how Sakura’s been longer with them than the previous assistant, Arai Chisato. They talked a little about the live singing segment, saying how they opened requests and that they’ve decided on a song, which they will introduce later.
The request this week was from someone named “kanaboon”, which sounds the same as rock band KANA-BOON, and the two of them fooled around a bit about how wow Kanaboon sent us a mail. The request was for “Donuts”, as the person used to wonder with their friend what “donuts” in the song referred to, and that as they will be parting ways after their final year in high school, they’d like to hear it on radio one last time.
They talked about how they’ve never performed this song before, as there’s a lot of voices from Gospellers in the song, and they’d need them to be around to perform it. On what “donuts” meant, they referred to the 45RPM vinyl records. Tegomass said they didn’t know either, when they first received the song as they didn’t belong to the vinyl record generation. They said they’re probably at the borderline of the generation that knows cassette tapes, and the kids these days probably don’t even know CDs either, since everyone probably just downloads off iTunes etc. They were starting to go off-tangent by discussing if the kids know how to download songs by themselves yet, when Sakura stopped them so they won’t lose time for the special segment later.♪ Donuts ♪
At the start of the live singing segment, they rambled off a bunch of greetings (T: Congratulations! Thank you! M: No worries… T: [in English] Congratulations! Thank you very much! Sakura: This is really long. M: No worries, have a safe trip! T: Here I go!) Then they went on the old joke of how they received 5 million requests which means not everyone over the world sent in one and they’re not worldwide famous yet. The requests were all very varied, but there were quite some for duos, like Kobukuro, Kinki Kids, Yuzu etc. They probably received the most for Tegomass’ songs though, followed by Kinki Kids, Kobukuro, NEWS... Hata Motohiro too. They then mentioned a few songs that caught their eyes like “Beauty and the Beast” by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson, Superfly’s “Ai wo Komete Hanataba wo” etc. They chose one song, but they won’t say now, because as Tegoshi said, they’re famous for saving things until “kamehameha” (M: You mean “tametameha”?[A play on the word for ‘save’]), playing on the Japanese for saving things in “tameru” and groups “ha” and the dragon ball skill.
So when they were thinking of how to perform this song, they thought it’d be nice to do it Tegomass-like, so they invited a special guest.
T: So let’s invite our special guest in…!
Guest: Konbanwa.
T: Just from this “konbanwa”, the Tegomass fans probably already-
M: Already realised.
T: Will find this voice familiar.
M: “Hmm? This voice?”
T: Our fans all know this voice. The person who’s been our band master since the first tour, Chino-san!
They talked a bit about their relationship with Chino-san, how he’s known them since their Sweden debut and Tegomass = Chino-san. Tegoshi said he’s heard Chino-san’s voice in one of the recent NEWS’ demo tracks. They asked what Chino-san’s been up with, and talked about how they worked together on the Shonen Club Premium too. (M: I feel relieved immediately with Chino-san around) Tegoshi added that Chino-san knows the voices etc. of Tegomass and NEWS very well, so they don’t need to tell him much. Though well, he’s just here as a talk guest that day. They continued on this joke for a while, saying they’d really wanted to do a session with Chino-san, but he forgot his guitar, and brought the trombone instead. Tegoshi told Chino-san how Tegomass sang “Aoi Bench” for the first time in a long while at NEWS’ anniversary tour, and they remembered how they sang it with just the guitars by Chino-san and Muto-san, and the Chiba-san’s keyboards. They wondered when the last tour was, how that was really fun, and they’d want to do something again. Tegoshi talked about how while it was NEWS’ 15th anniversary, it was also Tegomass’ 10th, though they’ve not been doing anything for it so far. Massu said maybe they could do a “It was our 10th anniversary” tour, though it’s really their 12th year already.
M: So, that was our special guest, Chino-san!
Sakura: NO!
T: Let’s meet again!
Sakura: What do you mean “Let’s meet again”! That’s so rude! To just ask him here for this. We already said it’s a “live singing” segment!
T: Ah really!
They talked again about how they chose a song from the requests, and it’ll be performed with the vocals by Tegomass, and guitar by Chino-san.♪ Ai no Katamari ♪
After the song, they talked about how there was this tension in the air, even for Chino-san, as he felt he couldn’t make any mistakes.
M: There were times like that right? When you made a lot of mistakes.
Chino: HAHAHAHAHAHAH! Don’t say that
Tegoshi added to say how everyone does, and a trait of Tegomass’ concerts is that they only use the instruments they have there. Some bands perform while playing pre-recorded tracks with the instruments they lack at the venue, but Tegomass don’t. They don’t have sequencers either, and Japanese artistes who don’t use that in their concerts are just Tegomass and Hirai Ken. Like, they don’t do things like input the guitar or whatever instrument they lack into the sequencer beforehand nor use the metronome, so depending on the day, a 3-min songs could end up a few seconds longer or shorter. There was a song when they just kept getting faster and faster. A tour when everyone is kept on their toes is really nice. Like for the “Aoi Bench” they mentioned just now, the fewer the instruments, the more obvious the mistakes, so the more nervous everyone gets.
Sakura asked how they felt after singing today, and Tegoshi said how they started out singing Kinki Kids’ songs before they had their own, like “Mou Kimi Igai Aisenai” and “Hakka Candy”. Tegomass didn’t have their original songs back them, but Johnny-san wanted them to sing as Tegomass, so they sang Kinki Kids. They said how “Ai no Katamari” is not just popular among fans, but also with everyone, from the number of requests they see at the karaoke. It was also additionally nervous for them to sing a song Kinki Kids wrote (Koichi wrote the melody and Tsuyoshi the lyrics). Massu brought up how Tegomass wrote a few songs in the same pattern too.
M: But somehow, the lyrics are always somewhat fluffy-
T: IT’S YOU! (laughter in the studio) It’s because of you! You little…
Sakura: Eh?
Tegoshi explained how he wrote great songs, like “Ai no Nakade”, thinking how “okay I guess these are probably the sort of lyrics that’ll get written”. (M: See it’s the same pattern, it’s the same pattern!) Tegoshi went on to say how he came together with their director then and Chino-san, wanting to make a rock song that will hype the venue up.
T: When we were done, we thought “Yeah this is a great song, let’s bowl everyone over with this!”. And passed the song to Masuda-san. Two weeks later, he came back with lyrics. Song title. “Tsuki no Tomodachi”. I got a shock. It became a song when a rabbit goes thumping around on the moon.
M: Well, we were on the right direction. Of possibly being able to write a song similar to “Ai no Katamari”. Just that it didn’t happen for Tegomass.
T: The colours come out. And for Kinki, it was this colour.
Sakura asked Chino-san for his thoughts, and he said it was fun to do this together after a long while. They’re both totally musicians already.
M: Like which part? Can we have more details…
Chino: Do you have to come back on me on that?
M: Nothing? You have nothing else to say on that?
Chino-san said how they gave suggestions during the rehearsals and it felt like he was working with fellow musicians. Tegoshi said NEWS’ concerts are mostly based on stuff like the production, when to fly etc., but for Tegomass’ concerts, it’s mostly based on the band rehearsals then figuring out how to link songs up from there. They’re completely different and interesting. They thanked Chino-san, sent him off and ended the segment. At the ending, they promoted Epcotia Encore 2018-2019. They joked about getting sleeping at the countdown concert again, and said maybe they’ll just create a nap time in between or something. It’s their first countdown concert and they’re not sure how things work, like if the Fuji TV broadcast of Johnny’s countdown would come in etc. Massu also thought Johnny’s net made a mistake when he saw the starting time written as 22:00 for the countdown concert as they never had a concert start at that time.

At the opening, he shared a recent change in his life - the mini 4WD conditions around him changed. He used to keep his course near where they always played mini 4WD, but they couldn’t let him keep the course there anymore, and a Johnny’s staff offered to keep them. There’s quite a huge load of them, like 4 boxes of them, but the staff said okay since their house was spacious. So he kept the course at their house for about 2 years, while asking every now and then if everything’s okay. So this staff used to stay in a spacious place out of the city, but recently moved to a smaller place within the city. And couldn’t keep Massu’s course anymore. Massu didn’t know where to keep them, and contacted everyone who regularly played mini 4WD with him to see if he could spread the boxes out. There was a friend who agreed to take them, as they could play with their children. So now his course is all over the place, rather than all being in one place. He hasn’t been playing mini 4WD much though, since the organiser was the staff who used to keep his course, but that staff is pretty bad at organising stuff so they haven’t been doing it much.

The second mail was from someone who will be going on a trip overseas for the first time soon. What are the places Massu would like to go to, and what are the necessities he always brings on his trips? He said he went to Peru, New York and China for work this year, and he felt he managed to travel overseas a lot this year. He’d like to go on an Asian tour, and places he’s never been to for his own trips. Like a World Heritage Site tour or something. For necessities, wet tissues, his tooth brushing set and his scrubbing towel. And the passport! Change of clothes, and a small bag on top of the suitcase.
The third mail was from a listener who keeps a female hedgehog at home named “Engawa”. They named the hedgehog “Engawa” as they thought her back looked like that of broiled fluke fin (aburi engawa). The name has received split reviews, and they’d like to know how Massu, the Naming Expert, finds this name. He first talked about how the fish got named engawa because it looked similar to the wooden verandah in Japanese homes (also engawa). He thought naming sense wise, this name scores about 42 points, which is fairly good sense, as it suggests looking like something. (M: [in English] Like a engawa.) The naming expert might have named it something else though.
The fourth mail came from someone who said Yamapi mentioned Massu on his radio programme recently, saying he has the image of someone who’d fold his laundry slowly and properly. When the listener’s son was in elementary school, he never once aligned the print-outs he brought home from school properly, and just left his clothes where he took it off. Did Massu arrange the print-outs properly before handing them to his mother? Also, when did Massu start being able to fold his own clothes? He said he’s actually really quick at folding and keeping his laundry away, such that he have more problems taking them out than anything else. As for the print-outs from school… he probably put them into the clear file so as not the get the corners folded and past them to his mother. He understands how they feel about getting the corners aligned though, like how he feels awful when he received receipts folded untidily, so he’d refold them such that the corners are aligned properly. He doesn’t have issues with people who’re untidy, just that it feels better for him to do things that way.
The fifth mail was from someone who loves bread and recently entered a phase of eating toast on its own. They have the image of Massu being someone who appreciates the taste of food on their own, and wanted to know if he’s tried eating toast on its own, and if he has recommendations for other things you can eat on their own. He does agree he belongs to that category, as he’d like to eat a bite of rice on its own first, before eating it with anything else. He doesn’t like using too much dressing either, and prefers putting stuff like mayonnaise on the side then pouring them over the food. He dumps mayonnaise on broccoli though. He does like tasting food on their own, so toast on its own might work, as long as it isn’t overly toasted. He agreed again that he might have that part to him where he enjoys eating food on its own.
The sixth mail is also on food, from a listener who eats sunny side ups with mayonnaise. Their friend told them that’s crazy, so they wanted to know what Massu eats his sunny side ups with. He said he sprinkles some salt and pepper while cooking them, and that’s all. Nothing else after they’re done. While he understands how mayonnaise and shoyu might match, but he wants to eat them separately and eat them only when he wants to. They do go well, though he probably eats sunny side ups on their own more often.

For Masterpiece this week, he played “Forget-Me-Not” by Ozaki Yutaka. He talked about how NEWS sang this together with Makihara Noriyuki and Yamazaki Ikusaburo at Music Fair. He’s already known this song as well as how it’s a great song before that, but having to sing it gave him the opportunity to listen to it lots and make it part of himself. Then he thought, he really liked this song. The power of the song, the weight of the lyrics… since then, he’s been singing the song at the karaoke.
At the ending, he referred to the mail on the hedgehog’s name, saying how he’s been trying to think of a name better than “Engawa”, but couldn’t quite. The only thing he could come up with was “ri-ha” [A play on the word hedgehog harinezumi, inverting the first part] and thought it was kind of interesting, but it’s still not as good as “engawa” and he shouldn’t have said it out.
