Shige’s new drama - “Akinai Seiden Kin to Gin”
Premieres 8 Dec, Fridays 7:30pm on NHKBS

shige kin to gin

Shige will be appearing in NHK’s upcoming period drama series “Akinai Seiden Kin to Gin”.
Set in the Edo period, the drama stars Koshiba Fuka as Sachi, a young girl sent to work in Osaka as a housemaid to support her family after her father and brother suddenly died. As she works at kimono shop Isuzuya, she feeds her thirst for knowledge and learns how to run a business, overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way of a female in that era.

Shige plays Souji, the second (of three) sons of the family running Isuzuya. The only son with the talent to run the business, he is feared by the staff and is often at odds with the eldest brother, who wastes his life away.

Massu’s new musical - “On The 20th Century”
Runs 12-31 Mar 2024 at Tokyu Theatre Orb, 5-10 Apr 2024 at Orix Theater

massu 20th century

It was announced on 19 Nov that Massu will be starring in a musical next spring.

The team behind “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” comes back to bring us “On The Twentieth Century”. First performed on Broadway in 1978, the musical won 5 Tony awards in the same year. Since then, it has received several revivals including ones at London, and has been performed in Japan both as a musical and as a Takarazuka production.

The story is set in the 1930s. Massu plays Oscar Jaffee, a dramatic, egoistic impresario who was once successful, but now broke. In an attempt to find success again, he boards a luxury train in order to convince his former protegee and lover, Lily Garland, to act for him again. However, Lily is now a successful and temperamental Hollywood star, with a new lover by her side. On the train ride, Oscar finds a sponsor (or not) in a religious fanatic and faces competition from his former assistant stage manager. How will the events unfold?

Fellow cast members for the 2024 Japan staging include Tamaki Ryo as Lily Garland, Onoda Ryunosuke as Oliver Webb, Kamikawa Kazuya as Owen O’Malley, Watanabe Daisuke as Bruce Granit, and Toda Keiko as Letitia Primrose.

Chris Bailey will direct and choreograph the musical, with support from Beth Crandell. Both of them worked with Massu on “How To Succeed”! We also see some familiar names in the ensemble members list (e.g. Mutou Kan, Saito Shunichiro, Maoto, Sakura, Taguchi Ena etc.) and staff members (costumes, make up etc.).

Massu’s comment:
“When I heard that I could work with the ‘How To Succeed’ team again, I said, ‘Yes!’ immediately, even before I found out the name of the musical (lol). I had so much fun the last time, I’m already starting to feel excited.
With Chris, we’ve worked together twice previously for ‘How To Succeed’. During rehearsals back then, there was once when he actually danced and showed us the choreography for one of the songs. It was so impressive, I still clearly remember how all the cast and staff gave him a standing ovation.
He was so cute and cool, I watched the recording of his dance over and over again, hoping I’d be able to bring my performance closer to his level.
The upcoming work is something that has been well-loved for many years and performed by lots of different people.
Whether the audience is a long-time fan of the work or someone who’s watching it for the first time this time, I hope to be able to deliver this version of ‘On the 20th Century’ while preserving all the things that are important and should not be forgotten regardless of the era we’re in. As this musical is a comedy, I hope the audience can laugh and have a good time without worrying about anything. Please come to the theatre to laugh! We’ll be waiting for you.”
