Hey all - I've got a fascination for the heights and weights of JE boys, and I'm assembling a big sort of database that compares the heights of everyone each group, and the groups as a whole. (I've discovered that Kamisen, the younger half of V6, are either incredibly underfed or have really inaccurate information about them out there - in fact, if anyone has stats that they think are more accurate that the ones available on dramawiki, I'd be very thankful for it!)

Anyway, they're all very skinny, so I was thinking I'd try to find out what their BMIs are and I did so using this website. It's for adults, but I think everyone is pretty much close enough.

According to the site: Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

NEWS:
Koyama - 17.1
Shige - 17.9
Ryo - 18.9
Tegoshi - 19.5
Kusano - 19.7
Yamapi - 19.8
Massu - 20

Shige and Koyama are pretty firmly underweight! In fact, 12 of the 35 people I looked at were underweight (that's not counting YA3 who aren't adults).


I'm including all the other groups I've done in case anyone is interested in them as well. I may also cross-post this, but I could be too lazy - who knows! (No KAT-TUN or Kinki Kids, sorry - but, you know, you can do them yourself if you're interested. But I did include two non-debuted groups - YA3 and ABC, cos Taiyo is tall and I love ABC.)

I don't know if other people are as fascinated by heights and weights as I am, but I could also probably upload my whole big spreadsheet if there's interest. It's probably most useful for people who are fans of multiple groups, I'd guess, and want all the information at their fingertips. It's got birthdates, heights, weights, height and weights in order for each group, height and weight ranges, that sort of thing.

I could tell that Koyama was underweight (though after all those practices for musicals maybe he's gained more muscle??) ...

But Shige, really?! o_o?? He's seemed pretty average to me~ But it guess it really has a lot to do with your height too, and he's one of the taller ones in NEWS, eh?

Well, it's supposed to compensate for how tall you are - so theoretically your BMI does reflect your relative skinniness. But if they seem off, which they definitely do sometimes just based on how they look, it could be because my numbers are wrong (I really suspect any type of height and weight issued by Johnny's, I think they increase heights and decrease weights) or because, for example, someone with muscles will have a higher weight for their size, and will therefore have a higher BMI. Shige. . . is not that musclar. But the numbers I have for him are 5'9" and 121 lbs.

Yeah, I really could not vouch for the accuracy of the weights. In fact, I'd doubt even quotes from the boys themselves saying how tall they are. And Tegoshi's weight has fluctuated a lot in the past year or so, so I don't know. His numbers are based on a height of 5'6" and a weight of 121 lbs (the weights are also converted from kilograms, which is a larger unit than the pound anyway).

This is true, it's just an approximation. I should probably have mentioned that in the post - I guess I feel so doubtful about all information about their heights and weights, and since I know that the website BMI isn't really accurate (heck, I'm underweight according to it!) so I forgot to mention it, I sort of took it for granted. If only we could go at them with one of those little electronic things that they use in gym class.

Glad you're interested :) Yeah, I do not know how recent the weights are - I think they all pretty much are the same weights that I found for everyone when I first got into JE in February. A couple may have been updated, but not all of them. And, as I just mentioned above, Yamapi's weight is pretty much almost definitely wrong.

Yeah, I think Takki was one of the biggest surprises for me. For a Johnny's, he's sort of short and chubby. I guess he must be quite muscular!

Please remember that those numbers probably are for western people. Asians are smaller than western people and thus have other numbers.
The only one currently (possibly) underweight in NEWS right now would be Tegoshi. Maybe Ryo would be close but I doubt it.

That's true. A quick google search shows a study in Singapore where the BMIs were dropped 3 or 4 points for each category cut-off. But, they did keep 18.5 as the limit for underweight. Also, the numbers were dropped because it was found that the different Asian ethnic groups in Singapore had higher proportions of body fat than Caucasians, and were more susceptible to heart disease and the other risk factors from obesity, therefore a lower BMI was needed to indicate the same level of risk.

I'm no expert, and certainly admit that these numbers should be taken with some skeptism and not as an indication that we should send them all care packages of fatty foods (which would go horribly awry). But, you know, I worked with what I had.

Don't worry, though, I'm not taking any of these BMIs too seriously. Apart from anything else, there's way too many variables. I just wanted a way to sort of compare skinniness levels, cos just having the heights and weights is really confusing.

. . . Sorry. I gave the link to the website, you can get his stats and put him in. I don't hate him, I just wasn't interested enough in him to track down his measurements. Uchi was included because 1) I'm a big Kanjani8 fan 2) I'm really attracted to Uchi and 3) He's tall and skinny and I wanted to know how tall and how skinny.

yea i've noticed too....a lot of the asian celebrities are underweight....if you look at the BMIs of the girls....it gets pretty low.

i get confused too...whether the info and stuff are really accurate.

For girls in the west I bet it's really bad, too - female celebrities, that is. But I'm used to the boys being at least a little bit meaty, so I often am a bit shocked at how skinny the JE boys are!

OK, but I've realized the NEWS numbers are definitely the ones I'm the least sure about - they're the most likely to have different numbers in different places on the internet and I didn't know which ones to use. But here's what I've got:

Koyama: 177 cm, 5'10" / 54 kg, 119 lbs
Ryo: 170 cm, 5'7" / 55 kg, 121 lbs
Yamapi: 174 cm, 5'8.5" / 60 kg, 132 lbs
Massu: 170 cm, 5'7" / 58 kg, 128 lbs
Shige: 175 cm, 5'9" / 55 kg, 121 lbs
Tegoshi: 168 cm, 5'6" / 55 kg, 121 lbs

I always thought Yabu was underweighted but it says he eats junk food everysingle night but he never gains weight (I wish I never do..XD) maybe he have 胃下垂,what is that in English? *searches* gastroptosis??. Someone told me alot of Japanese people have gastroptosis. I also thought Yamapi weighted more than anyone in NewS, but I guess all the running in Proposal Daisakusen made him lose all that weight XDD

LOL, this is really interesting, for some reason. I would like to see your whole spreadsheet, too! Yeah, I don't always trust dramawiki... though they give the most random facts (eyesight? footlength?). Yamapi could have been closer to 76 kg during the Kurosagi era, but I think he's lost weight (but still, that seems excessive). I think Tegoshi has gotten taller. Wikis are listing him as 170 cm, and I now have trouble determining whether he or Massu is taller. And I don't know why, but I keep being surprised that Shige is so tall. Everytime I see him in a line-up or something, I'm just like, akira shock!

Anyway, it looks like I'll be uploading the spreadsheet, but I need to finish it up. Which I may do soon, but I'm working on spreadsheets at work, too - we'll have to see if my new-found love of statistics will overcome my exhaustion with excel.

Yeah, Tegoshi, like Yamapi, has definitely had some body changes in recent months. It's possible that my NEWS numbers are pre-hiatus, even, so I wonder. Dramawiki is probably a bit less accurate than imdb, and I've caught imdb in some gross lies - plus, there's the "outright lying" factor, even if people are putting in the official recent stats. (I like the footlength thing! XD I always wonder if it's true what they say about boys with big feet! . . . but it's not on the spreadsheet.)

Hehe, Shige is like a height ninja. He has a short aura, the poor boy. But it's sexy when I realize he's tall - like, "Oooh, Shige! Secretly manly!"

Ryo definitely has a skinny body type, and I think even for his body type he's too skinny - you can see it in his face, even, all the fat is just stripped away.

i was really interested in bmi measurements too. but after reading different books, there are so many variables that contribute to the accuracy of bmi testing. the most accurate is weighing urself underwater. but i guess these boys are letting magazines know what their height and weight are. if you're getting info from wiki or something, the facts could've been from magazine articles dated years back. so yeah, it'd be difficult to be entirely accurate. pi's must've been difficult; i can totally imagine. his weight fluctuates like crazy. i'm pretty sure ryo and tesshi should have much lower bmi's than that. but what can you do when you have limitations, right? you must've spent a lot of time getting all the info and doing calculations. it was surely interesting. good job :)

Yeah, I just checked the NEWS numbers in the Japanese wikipedia and it had totally different numbers - and sometimes they were dated April 4th so I'm going to go with the revised numbers for my final spreadsheet. Tegoshi I've got 170/52 and Shige I've got 175/62, so Tego's a lot skinnier and Shige, fatter. Koyama got up to 58 kg, though, so he's more in normal weight range, woo!

I think there's definitely a LOT of room to be fatter than them and still be healthy weight. I mean, technically there's about 3 BMI points, but also visually! Better to be fatter.

Yeah, I just checked the Japanese wikipedia and for NEWS especially I've sometimes got three different numbers from three different sources - it's exhausting!

I do plan on uploading the spreadsheet, so I'll post it here - I've got a few more things to add, plus I just changed some of the numbers. XD So that'll have more updated BMIs as well.

Yeah, the reaction is sort of like "Oh, no, they're so skinny" but then you think "Actually, looking at them, we're doing pretty good here!" More of them are healthy than you might expect.

Kamisen, I don't know! It's really bothering me, those numbers cannot be right. But I don't know where to go for accurate V6 weights. I only just got into them and I don't move in V6 fandom circles! I should try to find out before I finish the spreadsheet. Or just make something up.

Anyway, sometimes the data really is unreliable. Weight fluctuates first of all. For example, clearly from watching shows and lives it's evident that Kame's gained weight you can see it in his adorable cheeks X33. But according to his Wikipedia page, it dropped like six pounds. = =; Then again, Wiki's not the best source, since anyone can edit it.
Yabu's pretty tall too. 174 cm... that's like Jin's height? Okay I gotta stop using KT examples. That's around 5' 9"! Funny thing with the juniors is that after watching lives from when they were squeaky midgets, you always think of them that way.

Sorry, no, not a fan. I mean, I don't despise them, but I definitely was not going to be able to stay interested enough to get all the data and compare it - not really drawn to them at all. (With Kinki Kids it was more like "for crying out loud, there's just two of them, I don't even care about the comparisons." T&T I'm a bigger fan of, plus it's Takki and don't we all want to know how fat Takki is?)

What I love about JE is that 5'9" counts as tall!! It totally does, I agree with you, but. . . it's funny. And yeah, after getting all this info I'm totally looking at the relative juniors differently. Except I can't get my mind around the fact that ABC are all around my age. They're juniors, they must be under 18! It's weird.

i think this is a very entertaining post. BMI is supposed to be more accurate method of weighing that normal scale in pounds, though as someone else pointed out, the scale might be off. but still. very entertaining, thanks!

Yeah, it's easier to compare this way, since short people will have lower weights without necessarily being skinnier. Glad you found it interesting!
